Oscar James Whatley, b January 22, 1919, d April 4, 1979 and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin, Falls County, Texas-was a son of William Henry and Flossie (Oden) Whatley. The paternal great grandparents were James Oscar and Mary Jane (Duty) Whatley, who were married in Falls County in 1859, and were natives of Georgia and Arkansas, respectively.
On April 22, 1939, Oscar James Whatley was married to Lillie Irene Johnson, b April 6, 1923-a daughter of William Elza Johnson who married Annie Lois Johnson was a daughter of David and Mary (Barton) Johnson-descendants of John H. and Jane (Marlin) Covington and Fleming James and Elizabeth Julia (Covington) Barton.
Oscar James and Irene lived on the McClanahan Road, where they reared their five children:
Ida Lois Whatley, b May 23, 1940-married a Mr. Wegwerth, and had Ervin Charles and Sandra Lynn Wegwerth.
Joyce Faye Whatley, b February 2, 1943-married February 11, 1961 to a Mr. Haverkamp, and had Belinda, Dawn, Louise, and Shannon Haverkamp.
Oscar James Whatley, Jr., b September 8, 1945-married and has four step-children: Michelle, Chris, Jami, and Monica.
Thomas Orville Whatley, b September 23, 1947-is not married.
Beverly Ann Whatley, b September 11, 1949-married September 17, 1966 to a Mr. Coffman, and has Shanae, Troy, Laura, and Kyle Coffman.
Since her husband's death, Irene has been very active in the Marlin Civic Center's various programs.
