John Ward, b September 20, 1845 in Walker County, d 1917 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin, Falls County--was the son of Sterling Stephen Ward and his
first wife, Jane(Sanders)Ward. He was reared and educated in Marlin, Texas and
afterward attended Baylor when the Civil War began. Returning home, John
enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Captain Willis Lang's Company of
Green's Brigade--the first company made up in Falls County. Because of his
youth, he was honorably discharged when the company reached San Antonio to unite
with Sibley's Army and he again returned home. Again he enlisted in the
CSA--this time in Captain D. G. Adams's Company joined Cook's Regiment of Heavy
Artillery, and John was reconfirmed a 2nd Lieutenant, and later became First
Lieutenamt of Company K; but for a time was detached to serve as Acting Adjutant
of the Regiment, under Major E. Von Harten. He participated in the battles on
Galveston Island, and commanded a Battery in the recapture by the Confederacy of
that place. Returning after the close of the Civil War, John Ward again
re-entered Baylor University for one year, and then embarked in the stock
business. For several years he drove cattle overland to Alexandria, to the mouth
of the Red River and other points on that river, whence they were shipped to New
Orleans.
On March 1, 1871 in Calvert, Robertson County, Texas, John Ward married Georgia
Gammill, b 1845, d 1913 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas--a
daughter of W.J. and Eizabeth(Richardson) Gammill- natives of Alabama who moved
to Mississippi and thence in 1864 to Robertson County, Texas where W.J. Gammill
died in 1877, and Elizabeth(Richardson)Gammill died in 1885.
John and Georgia(Gammill) Ward had four children--all born in Falls County,
Texas.
Julia Ward, graduated from Lucy Cobb Institute in 1891 in Athens, Georgia--no
futher information.
Burr Gammill Ward, b November 13, 1874, d Mar 7, 1930 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin--became an M.D. after receiving education at Marmaduke
Military Academy in Sweet Springs, Missouri--married Aline Oltorf, , b November
24, 1876, d June 16, 1947 and buried by her husband.
John Jay Ward-- no information.
John Ward II was sheriff of Falls County, Texas in 1892; however, it is not
known when he was elected to that position, nor how long he served in that
capacity.
