JAMES MADISON WALKER

 

     James Madison Walker, b ca 1820 in Alabama, died before 1870 in Falls County, Texas - married ca 1829 in Louisiana to Louisa Elizabeth Dial, b ca 1820 in Louisiana, died after 1880 in Falls County, Texas.

     In 1850, James Madison Walker and his family lived in Houston County, Texas, settling in Falls County before 1855 in the Brushy Creek area. James and Louisa (Dial) Walker were the parents of nine known children:

     Sarah A. Walker, b 1841 in Louisiana - married July 13, 1858 in Falls County, Texas to William B. Shelton, b ca 1831 in Tennessee - a son of A. M. and Mary Shelton, of Tennessee.

     Mary Walker, b ca 1842 in Texas - married William Lowe. Among their children was George Lowe, b 1859, and others unidentified.

     Robert Hamrick Walker, b ca 1848 in Polk County, Texas - married Mary (maiden name unknown), b 1850 in Tennessee. By 1870, one son, Robert Walker, was the only child.

     Abner Walker, b ca 1849 in Houston County, Texas - married Catharine (maiden name unknown),

b 1847 in Arkansas. Abner shot a man - a Mr. Heaton - over some cattle his mother had sold, and was sentenced to life in prison. He had two known daughters, Eliza Walker, b 1867, and Martha Walker, b 1870. Any other children are unidentified.

     Betty A. Walker, b ca 1850 in Houston County, Texas - married December 24, 1867 to Daniel Boone Richey, Jr., and had James Richey, b 1868; and John Richey, b 1870 - who was murdered by Bus Wyres, ca 1892.

     John Davis Walker, b 1851 in Houston County, Texas - married December 29,1875 to MaryJ. Wyres, b ca 1859 in Falls County, Texas - a daughter of Victor and Elizabeth (Ray) Wyres. John and Mary lived in New Mexico in 1939. No further information.

     James Madison Walker, Jr., b ca 1853 in Houston County, Texas, d February 13, 1939 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery - married on March 15, 1877 to Miss A. L. Cross. They left Falls County, but subsequently returned and sued the State of Texas for a bond he had paid in 1925. He won the case. James Madison Walker, Jr. lived to be over 86 years of age. They had several children - including a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Sill, who was a resident of Amarillo, Texas in 1939.

     George W. Walker, b 1856 in Falls County, Texas - married June 8, 1880 to Sendy Gross.

     Louisa Elizabeth A. Walker, b 1859 in Falls County, Texas - married July 22, 1875 to George W. Wyres, b 1857 - a son of Victor and Elizabeth (Ray) Wyres. The marriage license names her as "E. A. Walker "

     The Walkers owned a large ranch in Northeast Falls County. There was a Walker's Chapel Church, School, and Cemetery which contains a few graves, and it, like many other cemeteries in Falls County, has not been preserved. Walker Street in Marlin, Texas was named for this family.
