DEWITT C. VARY
DeWitt C. Vary, b 1802 in New Jersey, died after December 8, 1853 at Alto
Springs, Falls County, Texas and his Will was filed for probate on February 7,
1854 -
was married to Henrietta Gray, b 1810 in New Jersey, d April 5, 1857 at Alto
Springs.
DeWitt and Henrietta immigrated to The Republic of Texas ca 1840
-
settling in
Robertson County (in
the part that is present-day Falls
County), where he was elected Justice of the Peace of Precinct 2 in 1842 and
1843. He was appointed Overseer by the Commissioner’s Court to serve on the
Roads and Review Committee in January 1843, to find the best route for a road
leading from Jarrett Menefee's, at the Falls of the Brazos, to a spring South of
Sandy Creek, to a prairie bluff on the South side of Big Creek, above the weed
prairie on said creek on a direct line to a cropping on Little Brazos about one
mile above the old fort, thence direct to Franklin. In late 1845, the Court
ordered a review of the road from Franklin to Dallas, via Alto Springs.
After Texas joined the United States, Mr. Vary was appointed U.S.
Postmaster of Alto Springs on May 22, 1846 -
serving in that position until May 20, 1853.
Henrietta (Gray) Vary's sister, Sarah L. Gray, who married Dr. David
Seeley, and her brothers, Dr. Darwin P. Gray, Burton F. Gray, David H. Gray, and
Daniel W. Gray, also came to Texas.
DeWitt and Henrietta Vary had no children; and after her husband's death,
Henrietta was married second on May 7, 1855 in Falls County, Texas to Thomas
Arnold. She lived only two years after her second marriage.
