CHARLES VARNADO

 

     Charles Varnado, b February 26, 1822 near Osyka, Pike County, Mississippi, d December 15, 1876 in Copiah County, Mississippi and buried in Old Providence Baptist Church Cemetery west of Hazlehurst, Mississippi - was a son of Samuel and Keziah (Newsom) Varnado, Jr., and a grandson of Samuel and Sarah (Newsom) Varnado - natives of South Carolina. The relationship of Charles' grandmother to his mother is not known.

     Samuel Varnado, Sr. was b February 15, 1754 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, died and was buried near Osyka, Pike County, Mississippi - a son of Leonard and Sarah (Hutto) Varnado. Leonard Varnado, who married in 1752 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, served in South Carolina with Isaac Carter's Command during the American Revolutionary War, for which he later received a pension. After the death of Sarah (Newsom) Varnado, Samuel Varnado, Sr. moved into Georgia with his children, where his son, Samuel Varnado, Jr. was married in Warren County to Keziah Newsom, b 1792 in Warren County, Georgia, d 1880 near Osyka, Pike County, Mississippi, and buried there - a daughter of John Newsom, who died in 1803 in Georgia, and his wife, Sarah (maiden name unknown) Newsom, who were the parents of only two children before John's death (Keziah and her brother, Moses Newsom). In 1809, Samuel Varnado, Sr., and Samuel Varnado, Jr., moved into Mississippi - settling on the Mississippi-Louisiana line, near Osyka, Pike County. Samuel Varnado, Sr. married second (name unknown), and had other children. They continued to reside there, until they died, and were buried there.

     On December 19, 1844 in Copiah County, Mississippi, Charles Varnado was married to Rebecca Jane Davis, b March 6, 1827 in Mississippi, d January 4, 1911 in Lincoln County, Mississippi and buried in Little Bahala Church Cemetery located East of Wesson, Mississippi - a daughter of Zacheus ("Zias") and Martha Ann ("Patsy" Ratliff) Davis, and a twin to Assenitl Elizabeth Davis who married Charles Varnado brother, Howell Varnado.

     Charles and Rebecca Jane (Davis) Varnado were the parents of nine children, and five of these moved to Falls County, Texas. These five children were:

     Cornelius Willington Varnado, who married Mar) Elizabeth Ratliff; Emma S. Varnado, who marriec Joshua Saxon; Rosella S. Varnado, who married Rober1 Smith Hunnicutt; William Howell Varnado, who married Lola Angela McInnis; and Sarah ("Sallie") Var. nado, who married Warren Oscar Fannin.

     Two of the children of Charles' brother, Howel: Varnado, and Rebecca Jane's sister, Assenith Elizabeth (Davis) Varnado, also moved into Falls County Mary Minerva Varnado, who married William Thomas Fannin - a brother of Warren Oscar Fannin who married Mary Minerva's double-first cousin; and Sarah Elizabeth Varnado, who married James Canady Monds, and later moved away from Falls County.
