JAMES KENDRICK TOMLINSON

 

 

     James Kendrick Tomlinson, b 1814 in Georgia, d 1865 in Falls County, Texas - was the third of seven children of James and Nancy (Dees) Tomlinson, who emigrated from Georgia to Conecuh County, Alabama about 1825. His grandparents, Bryant and Sarah (Kendrick) Tomlinson, of North Carolina, had immigrated to Warren County, Georgia at an early date.

     James Kendrick Tomlinson was married in Alabama to Sarah Jemima Stallworth, b 1820 in Alabama, d 1872 in Falls County, Texas - the twelfth child of Nicholas Stallworth, b April 25, 1777 in Edgefield, South Carolina, d December 6, 1836 in Alabama, and his wife, Mary (Adams) Stallworth, b January 13, 1778 in Edgefield District, South Carolina, died - date unknown - in Alabama.

     James Kendrick and Sarah Jemima (Stallworth) Tomlinson came to Falls County, Texas ca 1858 settling in the Tomlinson Hill area (so-called for the family), where he engaged in livestock raising and farming near the large plantation of his brother-in-law, Churchill Jones. For a brief time, James Kendrick served at Galveston with the Confederate States Army, during the Civil War.

     James K. and Sarah Jemima were the parents of eight children:

     James Eldridge Tomlinson, b January 11, 1843 in Alabama, d April 29, 1888 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Beulah Cemetery - married October 1,1868 to Emma Diantha Perry, b November 11,1845 in Grimes County, Texas, d September 29,1919 and buried in Beulah Cemetery - a daughter of Judge Albert G. and Harriett Elizabeth (Grimes) Perry, pioneers to Texas before the War for Independence, who settled in the old Peyton Community - later renamed "Perry,' in his honor, of Falls County, Texas.

     William Tomlinson, b ca 1844-was killed at Yellow Bayou, Louisiana, in 1865, while in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War.

     Amanda Tomlinson, b 1846, d August 5, 1885 and buried in Beulah Cemetery - married Horace I. Young.

     Augustus Franklin Tomlinson (called "Gus"), b 1848 in Conecuh County, Alabama, d 1930 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott, Texas - married in 1872 to Elizabeth Jane Landrum, b 1855, d 1946 - a daughter of Dr. Benjamin L. and Elizabeth (Park) Landrum - natives of South Carolina, who had settled in Falls County, Texas.

     John N. Tomlinson, b January 1, 1850 in Alabama, d December 12, 1875 and buried in Beulah Cemetery - married Christian McPherson.

     Eldridge Alexander Tomlinson, b November 15, 1853 in Alabama, d August 7, 1936 - married Ella Louise Landrum, b May 8 1860, d May 21, 1935.

     Sarah Elizabeth Tomlinson, b August 15, 1859, d August 3, 1933 - married Elmore Landrum (called "Pete"), b April 22, 1850, d August 22, 1932.

     Robert E. Lee Tomlinson, b ca 1856 in Alabama - married Elizabeth Etheridge - a daughter of W. G. and Ellen (Birkes) Etheridge.

     The Tomlinson family has some of the best-known citizens in Falls County, Texas. The Old Settlers and Veterans Association of Falls County maintain their meeting grounds at Tomlinson Hill, and have an annual fish fry, barbecue, and fiddle contest annually. The site was deeded to the Association by the Tomlinson Family.
