ALTON MONROE TOBIAS, JR.
Alton Monroe Tobias, Jr., b October 3, 1922
in Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas, d August 11, 1977 at the Veterans
Administration Hospital in Temple, Bell County, Texas - being a veteran of World
War II - was a son of Alton M. Tobias, Sr., b ca 1898 in Limestone County,
Texas, d June 1960, and his wife, Bessie Rochelle, b 1901, and now a resident of
Elmwood Nursing in Marlin. The father was a veteran of World War I.
On November 20, 1940, Alton M. Tobias, Jr.
was married to Leola Howze, b July 20, 1922 at the family farm in Durango, Falls
County, Texas - a daughter of Daniel Guy Howze, b August 19, 1887, d February 1,
1962 at Durango, and his wife, Effie Lee Grisham, b August 19, 1887 in Durango,
d February 1, 1962 in Durango. Effie Lee (Grisham) Howze was a daughter of John
H. and Deloach (Crouch) Grisham.
Alton, Jr. and Leola lived at Lott, where
his hobbies were painting, string art, and photography. He served in the U.S.
Navy aboard the ship, U.S.S. Lindsey, which suffered a direct hit, killing
two-thirds of the crew. He was a member of the Westphalia VFW Post, and was a
member of the Lott Presbyterian Church. He and Leola were the parents of five
children: Buddy - deceased, Jimmy Dwayne, Jerry, Donna Sue, and Danny Tobias.
