ARTHUR THREADGILL, SR.
Arthur Threadgill, Sr., b August 1, 1867 in Wadesborough, North Carolina
- came to Texas in 1887 with his widowed mother - his father having died young
as a result of a wound inflicted while serving in the Confederate States Army
during the Civil War. An uncle had previously settled in Navasota, Texas, where
he owned a jewelry store; and young Arthur worked for him for two years -
becoming interested in the jewelry business, and learning the trade.
Arthur decided to establish his own business, and selected a site in
Marlin, Falls County, Texas, for his enterprise. He
borrowed $500
from his uncle, came to Marlin in 1889, and opened his first store on the corner
of Live Oak and Commerce Streets. The building later housed the First National
Bank of Marlin. In 1901, Arthur moved to the location where the business
continues in operation in 1986, on Live Oak Street, under the management and
ownership of his son, Arthur Threadgill, Jr.
On June 14, 1899, Mr. Threadgill was married to Martha Jane Foster
(called "Patti"), b 1879 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d June 21, 1974 and
buried in Calvary Cemetery by her husband -
a daughter of Albert Ware and Mildred (Read) Foster. Arthur ThrE gill's mother,
Martha J. Threadgill, lived with her in Marlin. She was born in 1847 in North
Carolina and died February 2,1897 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - two
years before Arthur was married. "Patti" Foster was named for her maternal
grandmother, Martha Jane (Heard) Read.
Mr. Threadgill was ashy, quiet man, but one
who
was known for his uncompromising honesty. Those who purchased
jewels from him had confidence in appraisal of them, and knew they were
receiving merchandise exactly as represented. He was a member the Methodist
Church for many years.
Arthur and "Patti" Threadgill were the parent four children:
Arthur Threadgill, Jr., who married
Dorothy Gallaher, and continues to own and operate the business established by
his father in Marlin in 1889 - Threadgill's Jewelry Store.
Lois Threadgill, who married Dr. Milton A. Do son, of Reagan, and had
issue, and resided in Marlin, Texas.
Carolyn Threadgill, who married E. A. Schulze and reside in Marlin,
