HEZEKIAH TAYLOR, I
Hezekiah Taylor, I, b ca 1858 in Louisiana, d 1891 and buried in Cedar
Valley Cemetery off Highway 7 on Chilton Road, Falls County, Texas - was a son
of John and Diana Taylor, slaves that were brought to Falls County ca 1856.
Hezekiah had learned to read and write, and be- came one of the early
teachers in the black schools of Falls County - teaching at Taylor, Cedar
Valley, and other schools for periods of three months at a time. He also
preached in the county. He believed in education, and many of his descendants
have gone on to obtain B.A. and M.A. degrees in the field of Education.
Hezekiah was married ca 1880 in Falls County, Texas to Julia Stuart, b ca
1864 in Falls County, d 1893 and buried at Cedar Valley Cemetery; and they lived
near her parents, Peter and Sarah Stuart.
The couple had seven children, with only five living to adulthood:
Thomas Taylor, b near Chilton, died as an infant.
Benjamin Taylor - married Pearl Swoops, and
Della Penny.
Sanford Taylor, b September 9,1883 near Chilton, d May 1967 and buried in
Cedar Valley Cemetery- married ca 1904 to Essie C. Wallace - a daughter of Dock
and Joanna (Landrum) Wallace.
Thadeus Taylor, b ca 1885 - married Leatha Scruggs.
Cleveland Taylor, born and died 1887.
Hezekiah Taylor, II, b ca 1889 - married Roberta Travis.
Roberta Taylor, b ca 1891 - married first
Charlie Shankle and married second John Thomas.
When the father died in 1891 and the mother in 1893, the orphaned
children were reared by their maternal grandparents Peter and Sarah Stuart.
