FINIS EARL TAYLOR
Finis Earl Taylor, b November 22, 1917 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas -
was a son of Finis Euphrates Taylor and his wife, Martha Elizabeth (Clendenning)
Taylor who married in Bruceville, Texas on September 11,1915. Earl grew up In
Marlin - graduating from Marlin High School in the Class of 1935. He worked at
the Max Lebrecht Grocery Store as a Clerk in the St. Paul Community until
January 1941, enlisting January 23,1941 in the U.S. Army, and being sent to Camp
Bowie at Brownwood, Texas.
On March 1, 1941 at Bruceville, Texas, Earl married Cora Lyon Crook - a
daughter of Joseph Emory and Cora Bell (Spurlin) Crook. Earl served twenty years
in the U.S. Army, with two enlistments. During World War II, he was with the
36th Division in North Africa and Italy -
received the
Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Medical Badge. Returning
to the United States in April 1944, he was stationed in Alabama, and then
discharged at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in September 1945.
Earl and Cora lived in Mooreville, Falls County, Texas - with Earl
working as a Nursing Assistant in the Veterans Administration Hospital until he
re-enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed first in Fort Hood, Texas and
then Baumholder, Germany - returning to the States in June 1954 where he
attended the Clinical Technician School at Fort Sam Houston, graduating with
honors in 1955. After additional duty stations in Arkansas, Earl was sent in
November 1958 to Korea, where he served until December 1959. The family lived in
Fort Ord, California from January 1960 until May 31,1963, when Earl completed
his twenty years of service with the U.S. Army.
Earl and Cora returned to Marlin, Falls County, Texas in June 1963, and
Earl again was employed in the Veterans Administration Hospital on July 15, 1963
as a Licensed Vocational Nurse - retiring from this position after twenty years
- on May 5, 1981.
Earl and Cora Taylor had four children: Martha Louise Taylor, b October
5, 1943 in Marlin, Texas.
Thomas Earl Taylor, b March 21, 1946 in Marlin, Texas.
James Paul Taylor, b May 8, 1948 in Marlin, Texas.
Joseph Mark Taylor, b March 29,1959 in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Earl and
Cora are members of the First United Methodist Church in Marlin, Texas, the
National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and Falls County Historical
Commission. They served as volunteers in Falls County Historical Museum, and are
active in many church and civic activities in the community. They continue to
reside in Marlin.
