EDWARD S. TATE
Edward S. Tate, b September 9, 1860 in Alabama, d January 19, 1944 and
buried in Stranger Cemetery, Falls County, Texas - was the youngest child of
Captain James Tate, b 1819, d March 5, 1875 in Marengo County, Alabama who
married September 17, 1839 in Elbert County, Georgia to Mary C. Edwards, b 1820,
d 1886 and buried in Stranger Cemetery, Falls County, Texas. James and Mary C.
(Edwards) Tate had nine children (seven sons and two daughters): Robert B. Tate,
who served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, died in service.
His "Death Claim" was filed April 29, 1863. The date and place of his death is
unknown. George W. Tate, who served in the Confederate States Army during the
Civil War - d November 12, 1864 while a Prisoner of War. The records state he
was buried in Grave #17 on Ship Island, Mississippi - which is out in the Gulf,
off coast. John Tate, who served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil
War, was killed at Chattanooga, Tennessee and buried in the Confederate Cemetery
there. James An- drew Tate (called "Guv"), served in the Confederate States
during the Civil War - is the only one of four sons who served who lived through
the war. He was the fourth son born to James and Mary (Edwards) Tate, on April
15, 1844 at Long Cane, Georgia, and died December 20, 1923 in Falls County,
Texas. James Andrew Tate had a son, James T. Tate, who moved to Kosse, Limestone
County, Texas, married Maggie Curry, and lived out his life there (1870-1934).
The fifth child of Captain James and Mary (Edwards) Tate was Ruth Ellen-who
married S. J. Threadgill. Sam P. Tate was the sixth child, and he lived out his
life and was buried in Cameron, Milam County, Texas, and had one daughter.
Charles W. Tate - the seventh child - was killed in or around Beaumont, Texas ca
1900, and apparently died childless. Mary Elizabeth Tate (called "Bettie"),
(1858-1920), married Andrew M. Brewer (called "Mart"), (1859-1930), of Kosse,
Texas and had one son, Sam, and three daughters: Marie, Esther, and Bessie
Brewer, and Bettie and Mart were buried in the Kosse Cemetery. The ninth and
youngest child of Captain James and Mary C. (Edwards) Tate is the subject of
this biography, Edward S. Tate.
After the death of his father, Edward S. Tate came in 1884 to Texas,
settling in Stranger, Falls County, with his mother, brothers Sam P. and Charles
W., and his sister, Mary Elizabeth.
On December 23, 1885, Edward married Mary Jane ("Mollie") Arnett, b December 30, 1868 at Stranger, d December 31,1963 and buried in the Stranger Cemetery by her husband. Edward and Mol- lie farmed in the Stranger Community all their married lives, on land which was located on the Little Brazos River. Mollie was a daughter of James Hansford and Phoebe (Somerville) Arnett.
Edward S. and Mary Jane ("Mollie" Arnett) Tate were the parents of four
sons:
Fletcher Arnett Tate, b November 5, 1886 at Stranger, d February 6, 1953
and buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin. He married Effie E. Swinnea, b
September 1, 1891 at Blue Ridge, d March 1, 1961 and buried by her husband - a
daughter of Suldon Wright and Mary Elizabeth (Hunnicutt) Swinnea. They had three
children, Chester, Mary Beth, and Margaret Ann Tate.
Clyde Edward Tate, b March 2,1888, d March 31, 1956 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin- married first on April 13, 1911 to Idus Elizabeth Garrett, b
June 30, 1893, d 1918 and buried in Stranger Cemetery - a daughter of Nathan
Willis and Martha Ellen (Jackson) Garrett. Clyde married second to Myrtle
Vinson, b February 18, 1892, d October 30, 1981- also buried in Calvary
Cemetery.
Charles Leslie Tate, b November 10, 1889 at Stranger, d May 13, 1953 and
buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin - married September 6, 1914 to Son- ora
Linnie Garrett (called "Nona"), b September 18, 1896, d After 1979 in Stanton,
California - a daughter of Nathan Willis and Martha Ellen (Jackson) Garrett.
Charles and Nona had two children: Charles Leslie Tate, Jr., b February 25, 1918
in Marlin - married June 5, 1949 to Jane Findlay, b March 5, 1921- and had no
children; and Nina Frances Tate, b November 14, 1920 in Marlin - married Helbert
Lusher (called "Gerry") and had Kenneth Lee Lusher, b August 21, 1944, who
married Gayle Graham; Thomas Alan Lusher, b June 20, 1952 who married Laura
Schill; and Leslie Scott Lusher, b June 3, 1955, d February 24, 1970 as a result
of being hit by a car while walking with a friend before his 15th birthday.
James Hansford Tate (always called "Dick"), b October 18,1891 at
Stranger, d October 11,1947 and buried in Stranger Cemetery - married December
17, 1918 in Falls County to Una Pearl Cornelison, b July 10, 1891 at Blue Ridge,
d February 2, 1980 at Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas, and buried by her
husband - a daughter of Samuel Milton and Mildred Ellen (Swinnea) Cornelison.
