JOHN ALBERT TARVER, SR.

 

 

     John Albert Tarver, b 1872 in Barbour County, Alabama, d June 16, 1957 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas and buried there in Woodland Cemetery, spent l1is early childhood near Atlanta, Georgia. In 1889, he traveled to Marlin, Falls County, Texas, where he was employed as a Clerk in the William Cameron & Company Lumber business.

    

     In 1891, John Albert Tarver was transferred to the Lott business, where he was Manager of the Retail Lumber Yard for a year, moving to Rosebud to establish a new yard for the company.

    

     On December 24, 1894 in Falls County, Texas, Mr. Tarver was married to Sallie Mullins - a daughter of E. H. and Jennie (Lott) Mullins - who grew the roses for which Rosebud was named. Sallie (Mullins) Tarver died without issue.

    

     In January 1899, John A. Tarver formed a partnership with S. G. Henslee, establishing the Tarver - Henslee Company. Their company soon became one of the leading businesses in Rosebud - engaging in hardware, grocery, and dry goods.

     

     In 1906, Mr. Tarver established the Planters National Bank of Rosebud, serving as its President until his retirement in 1950. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and prominent in civic, school, and cultural affairs of the community.

    

    John Albert Tarver was married second to Jessie Grace McLane, of Moody, Texas, who preceded him in death. They were the parents of two sons:

    

     John Albert Tarver, Jr., b ca 1907 in Rosebud, was a graduate of the Class of 1926 at Texas A&M University.  He succeeded his father as President of Planter's National Bank of Rosebud. He married Mary Dicia Harris, b September 20, 1921 in Hugo, Oklahoma, d March 15, 1980 and buried in Woodland Cemetery at Rosebud - a daughter of Giles E. and Thomas (Easterwood) Harris. They were the parents of five children.

    

     Major Jackson M. Tarver, b ca 1909, d October 22, 1945, by drowning while on duty on the Philippine Islands. Jackson was serving as Mayor of Rosebud at the time of his enlistment in World War II in January 1942. In the service, he was Executive Officer of the Amphibian Battalion with Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Weldon Gibbs of Rosebud, when they liberated Los Banos Prisoner of War Camp, freeing over 2,000 internees.

Correct information follows:

     My dad, John Albert Tarver, Jr., was born on June 6, 1909.  He graduated from Rosebud High School in 1926.  He graduated from Texas A&M in 1930.

     As far as I know, Giles & Tom (yes, Thomas was her real name) Harris had two children, Virginia Robinson Harris and Mary Dicia Harris (my mother).

     My uncle Jackson M. Tarver was born in 1912 or 1913 (I think).  He graduated from Texas A&M in 1933.  His son, Jack M. Tarver is an attorney, who practices law in Temple, TX.
