GEORGE W. STOREY
George W.
Storey, b April 11, 1828, Greene County Alabama, d July 15, 1913 and buried in
Carolina Cemetery near Durango, Falls County, Texas - was a son of Anthony and
Margaret (Means) Storey, natives of
South Carolina, who moved to Alabama in 1823, where Anthony engaged in farming
and blacksmithing. Anthony served in the War of
1812, and participated in the Battle at Charleston. He brought his family to the
Durango area of Falls County, Texas in 1867, and died there in 1869. His wife, b
1798, survived him until
1884, and they were both buried in Carolina Cemetery.
George W. Storey was the fifth of twelve children of Anthony and Margaret
Storey, with ten living to maturity. Their other children were: Mary A. Storey
who married Frieson White; Malissa Storey who married Anderson Chapple; Rebecca
Storey who married David L. White; J. W. Storey; Elvira E. Storey who married
David Morrow; William L. Storey who was killed at Springfield, Missouri during
the Civil War while in the Confederate States Army; Belle Storey who married A.
R. Joice; J. B. Storey; and Sarah E. Storey who married B. F. Bouchillon.
George W. Storey
was educated in Alabama, and reared on a farm. He worked as an Overseer for
three
years. In 1851, he came to Freestone County, Texas, where he farmed and engaged
in blacksmithing for
three years.
He was married in 1852 to Josephine C. Douglas, b July 15, 1836 in Texas, d
March 13, 1898
and buried in Carolina Cemetery - a daughter of John and Margaret (Braden)
Douglas of South Carolina and
Texas, respectively. John Douglas, b 1799, d 1882 came to Robertson County,
Texas in 1837, where he was a Texas Ranger and a Carpenter. His wife, Margaret
(Braden) Douglas, was born in 1800, d 1868 in Falls County.
George W. and
Josephine C. (Douglas) Storey were the parents of twelve children:
James W. Storey;
Margaret Storey who married J. W. Pottinger; Joseph A. Storey; Irah Storey who
married Jesse E. Adkins; George L. Storey; Mary J. Storey who died before 1892;
W. A. Storey; Doran Storey who died before 1892; John D. Storey; Elvira B.
Storey who died before 1892; Josephine Storey who died before 1892; and Louvenia
V. Storey.
George and
Josephine Storey lived in the Durango area, where he purchased the Laban Dodson
farm at Dodson Wells. He had the first blacksmith shop in Durango, and a farm of
nearly 400 acres.
During the Civil
War, George joined Company A, Thirtieth Regiment, under Colonel E. J. Gurley of
Waco, Texas - being detailed in the blacksmith and mechanical service, of the
Confederate States Army.
He became a
Mason in 1849, and a member of the Carolina Lodge of A.&F. M. #330, which was
later moved to Lott.
