NICHOLAS STALLWORTH, III
Nicholas Stallworth, III, b March 10, 1837 in Conecuh
County, Alabama, d February 28, 1909 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried
in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin ‑ was a son of Nicholas and Martha Ann (Travis)
Stallworth, Jr., of Edgefield District, South Carolina, who moved to Alabama
about 1817.
On December 10, 1857 in Conecuh County, Alabama,
Nicholas III was married to Lucy M. Turk, b February 8, 1838 at Troy, Alabama, d
January 7, 1918 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery in
Marlin ‑ a daughter of George William and Rebecca W. (Allen) Turk, natives of
Georgia.
"Nick" was reared to farm life and educated in the
public schools of Alabama and at The University of Alabama. In 1861, enlisted in
the Confederate States Army in Company C, First Alabama Infantry‑enlisting in
Wilcox County, Alabama. The next year, 1862, he raised Company F in Conecuh
County, First Battalion of Hilliard's Legion, of which he was Captain. He served
under General Bragg in Kentucky, General Buckner in Tennessee, and General
Longstreet in Virginia ‑ achieving the rank of Major. After the war, Nick
returned to Alabama, and moved to Falls County, Texas about 1867, where his
brother, Francis Marion Stallworth, had settled about 1856 ‑ traveling with the
Tomlinson family and other relatives. Nick settled on the East side of the
Brazos River, after the River had changed course. In 1870, he farmed on Perry
Creek, where he resided until 1886, when he moved into Marlin.
Major Stallworth served two terms as Falls County Tax
Assessor and Collector, was Justice of the Peace, a Mason in Marlin Lodge No.
152, A.F. and A.M.; and was Treasurer of the Texas State Grange, and a member of
the Baptist Church.
Nicolas III and Lucy had three children, and also
reared two of her nieces, Ida and Myra Turk. Their children were:
George Stallworth, b ca 1858 in Alabama, d ca 1868 on
the family farm in Falls County, Texas.
Francis Marion Stallworth, b December 27, 1860 in
Evergreen, Alabama, d May 16, 1922 in the collapse of the Brazos River Bridge
during a major flood, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin. He married
in Marlin, Texas on December 23, 1891 to Bellah Etheridge ‑ a daughter of
William G. and E. (Birkes) Etheridge.
Dosh West Stallworth, b April 11, 1876 in Falls
County, Texas, d July 14, 1955 at Baytown, Texas married in 1902 to Eloise Mae
Reynolds. In 1923, Dosh moved to Waco, Texas, where he became Clerk of the Court
of Civil Appeals, 10th Judicial District. In 1936, he bought a farm near Waco,
which is now subdivided into residential lots. They were the parents of Dan
Walter Stallworth, b September 26, 1903 in Marlin, who graduated from Baylor
University and also studied at the Universities of Michigan and Wisconsin, and
married Marian C. Stanford, of Waco, Texas. Dan Walter Stallworth was a football
coach for thirty years, and became Athletic Director of Baytown schools. He was
inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Fame on August 5, 1965. Dan
Walter and Marian were the parents of Lucy Ann Stallworth, who married in
Houston, Texas to John Joseph Kubiszan ‑ a noted basketball player at the
University of Alabama; and Marilyn Stallworth, b 1932, d 1935 in Quanah, Texas.
The second child of Dosh West and Eloise Mae (Reynolds) Stallworth was Ann Lou
Stallworth, b January 11, 1911 in Waco, who married on February 20, 1937 to
James Leonard Smith ‑ Vice President of Republic Bank of Dallas, Texas.
