FRANCIS MARION STALLWORTH, I
Francis Marion Stallworth, I, b November 26, 1835 in
Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama, d October 17, 1905 in Falls County, Texas
and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin ‑ was a son of Nicholas and Martha Ann
(Travis) Stallworth joined relatives including the James K. Tomlinson family (a
brother of Susan Tomlinson Jones, wife of Churchill Jones), and the John D. and
Mary (Stallworth) Travis family, in their move from Alabama to Texas. They
settled on Deer Creek, near Tomlinson Hill, and not too distant from the
Churchill Jones Plantation.
On June 15, 1856 in Falls County, Texas, Francis
Marion Stallworth was married to Lucinda M. Jones, b June 17, 1836 in Conecuh County, Alabama, d April 18, 1870
and buried in the Churchill Jones Family Cemetery ‑ a daughter of Churchill and
Susan (Tomlinson) Jones, natives of Caroline County, Virginia and Georgia,
respectively, who came to Falls County in the early 1850's. Lucinda had come to
Falls County with her parents, who settled on the west side of the Falls on the
Brazos River, at the site of Old Viesca ‑ seat of government for the Sterling
Clack Robertson Colony.
The Tomlinson and Jones families were large slave
owners, and Francis Marion Stallworth (called "Frank") enlisted in the
Confederate States Army, leaving Lucinda at with three children; but he
returned from the war before its conclusion. His service was with Company B,
Waller's Battalion, Green's Brigade.
Frank farmed all his life, and the Stallworth land near Tomlinson Hill has been
in the family since that time. He and Lucinda were the parents of six children:
Martha Caroline Stallworth, b September 21, 1858 in
Falls County, Texas, d 1940 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas ‑
married Andrew Peyton and had seven children.
Sarah Stallworth, b December 3, 1859 in Falls County,
Texas, d 1904 and buried in Calvary Cemetery ‑ married William Judson Finks, of
Culpepper, Virginia, and had seven children.
Harley Walter Stallworth, b December 1, 1863, d
October 13, 1882 of pneumonia, and buried in the Churchill Jones Family
Cemetery.
Francis Marion Stallworth, Jr., b January 30, 1865 in
Falls County, Texas, d 1908 and buried in Cal vary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas ‑
remained in the family until 1880. After attending school in Marlin, he
took a two‑year course of study at Texas A&M College, and then entered upon a
business career. He inherited his mother's estate, and took over the care and
management of her land, which she had inherited from her father. Young
Stallworth also made loans, at a suitable interest rate, and owned stock in the
Fair Association. He was never married.
Lucinda Stallworth, b January 20, 1867 in Falls
County, Texas, d September 24, 1870 and buried in the Churchill Jones Family
Cemetery.
Sanford Jones Stallworth, b April 18, 1870 in Falls
County, Texas, d 1933 in Marlin, Texas ‑ married in 1888 to Dora Minerva Garrett
‑ a daughter of Robert Jasper and Mary ("Mollie" Smith) Garrett, of Stranger.
They lived first in the Lott Community‑later moving to Marlin. Their only son,
Sanford Peyton Stallworth, b March 12, 1903 in Lott ‑ married September 21, 1929
in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Carolyn Ertl, and they had two daughters.
Lucinda M. (Jones) Stallworth died when her youngest
son was born; and in 1873, Francis Marion Stallworth, I was married second to
Rebecca Burroughs, and they had three children.
Thomas Burroughs Stallworth, b October 22, 1876 in
Falls County, Texas, d 1918 in the "flu" epidemic and was buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin ‑ who married Julia Alice Currie of Durango, and had three
children.
Harry Bryan Stallworth, b November 15, 1878, d
November 11, 1954 in Marlin, Texas ‑ married Elizabeth Foster, and had two
children.
Mary Louise Stallworth (called "May"), b January 17,
1881 in Falls County, Texas, d November 5, 1945 and buried in Calvary Cemetery
in Marlin ‑ married Thomas Moody Phillips, b November 25, 1861, d March 26, 1953
and buried in Calvary Cemetery. They were the parents of two children: Frank
Stallworth Phillips, b ca 1908, who married May Criswell, and died without
issue; and Thomas Moody Phillips, Jr., born and died 1910.
There are descendants of Francis Marion Stallworth
and both his wives, who continue to reside in Falls County, Texas.
