HENRY F. SPENCER
Henry F. Spencer, b August 24, 1836 in Prince Albert
County, Virginia, d September 15, 1907 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried
in Bremond Cemetery, Robertson County, Texas ‑ was one of seven children of
Reverend Benjamin Thomas Spencer, b March 25, 1810 in Virginia, d September 5,
1885 in Marlin and buried in Bremond Cemetery, and his wife, formerly a Miss
Fennell ‑daughter of John and Margaret ("Peggy" Bedford) Fennell.
Henry and three of his brothers served in the
Confederate States Army in Virginia during the Civil War, where the eldest
brother, Wesley Spencer, died.
Henry F. Spencer was married on February 24, 1857 in Virginia to Josephine Boyd,
b May 21, 1838 in Mecklenburg, Virginia, d April 10, 1875 in Robertson County,
Texas in Bremond Cemetery.
After the Civil War, the Spencer family ‑ including
Henry, his father and two brothers, Charles Bedford Spencer and Benjamin Thomas
Spencer, Jr. ‑ immigrated to Texas. The father settled at Thornton in Limestone
County, where he served as a Methodist minister, while his sons came to Falls
County.
Henry F. Spencer established an excellent trade in
lumber in Marlin, where he lived the remainder of his life.
Henry and Josephine (Boyd) Spencer were the parents
of five children: Richard Boyd Spencer, Thomas Cole Spencer, Anna Spencer who
married A. E. Sessions of Hillsboro, Texas; Henry Spencer, and Josephine Spencer
who married T. B. Ramey ‑a jeweler in Tyler, Texas. Richard and Thomas were
trained in the lumber business, and Thomas was associated with the R. B. Spencer
Lumber Company, which expanded interests to 44 lumber yards in Texas.
