WALTER SCOTT SMITH, JR., M.D.
Walter Scott Smith, Jr., b August 11, 1911, d April
24, 1969 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas‑was a son of Dr. Walter Scott and Martha
Virginia (McCrary) Smith who moved to Falls County, Texas in 1911. Walter, Jr.
attended school in Marlin, Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, and The University
of Texas in Austin, where he received his B.S. degree. He received his M.D.
degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 1935,
and served his internship at City Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
On October 1, 1938, Dr. Walter Scott Smith, Jr. was
married to Mary Elizabeth Wilson, b March 2, 1913 in Fayetteville, Arkansas ‑ a
daughter of John Melvin and Mamie (Trent) Wilson. John Melvin Wilson was b May
28, 1882 in Evening Shade, Arkansas, d July 26, 1964; and Mamie (Trent) Wilson
was b 1884 in Arkansas, d 1917 in Arkansas; and John Melvin Wilson moved to
Marlin, Falls County, Texas in 1919 with his two young children. He subsequently
married second to Lucile Rogers, and they had twin daughters.
Dr.
Walter Scott Smith, Jr. engaged in the general practice of medicine in Marlin
from 1937 until 1942, at which time he joined the Medical Corps of the U.S. Air
Force, in which he served as a flight surgeon until 1946. On February 1, 1946,
he joined the staff of the Torbett Clinic and Hospital as a member of the Eye,
Ear, Nose and Throat Department; and in 1956, he started the Department of
Allergy in which practice he continued until his death.
Dr. Walter, Jr. was a member of the Falls County,
Texas and American Medical Associations, the Gulf Coast Allergy Society, and an
associate member of the American College of Allergies.
Dr.
Walter Scott and Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Smith, Jr. were the parents of two
sons:
Walter Scott Smith III, b October 26, 1940 in Marlin,
Texas, was educated at The University of Texas in Austin, and Baylor University
Law School. He practiced law in Waco, Texas, was elected District Judge, and in
January 1985, he was appointed to the Federal Bench by President Ronald Reagan.
Often called "Walt," he married first to Kay Callan of Marlin, Texas and had two
children, Debra Elizabeth, b 1966, and Susan Kay, b 1969. Walt married second to
Mrs. Jill (Jost) Allen ‑daughter of a V. A. Hospital dentist in Marlin, Texas.
They have no children, but are rearing her two children by her former marriage,
Kem and Todd Allen. Judge and Mrs Walter Scott Smith III now reside in Waco,
Texas.
Jack Wilson Smith, August 29, 1943 in Sherman, Texas
where his father was stationed during World War II, attended Marlin schools, The
University of Texas in Austin, and Baylor University ‑ receiving his degree from
Baylor. On December 3, 1966, Jack married Vicki Lynn Sheehy, b January 6, 1947
in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas ‑ a daughter of John Francis and Mary
Frances (Barnwell) Sheehy. They are the parents of three daughters.
Dr. Walter Scott Smith, Jr. was an Elder in the First
Presbyterian Church of Marlin, a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, a member of the
Marlin Rotary Club, and received the award of the Silver Beaver from the Boy
Scouts of America in 1957.
His beloved hobby was in the breeding and improvement
of Duroc swine. In this activity, he served as chairman of the Falls County
Swine Committee, and was vice president of the Texas Hog Marketing Association
at the time of his death. Mary Elizabeth (Wilson) Smith continues to reside in
Marlin near her son, Jack, who now resides in his parents' home.
