ERASTUS SMITH
Erastus Smith, b ca 1830 in Kentucky‑was a son of
Joseph and Sarah (Kenny) Smith. He married ca 1851 to Dorcas Huff, of Kentucky,
and the family immigrated to Anderson County, Texas before coming to Falls
County by 1870. Erastus was a brother of Katherine Smith, who married John R.
McClanahan, a native of Mississippi, who settled in Falls County, and for whom
the community of McClanahan was named.
Erastus and Dorcas (Huff) Smith had seven children:
John B. Smith, b January 19, 1846 in Kentucky, d
March 19, 1889 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery ‑ married Sarah A. Jolly, b
June 11, 1849 in Mississippi, d August 27, 1926 and buried in McClanahan
Cemetery. Their children were: Paschal E. Smith, b ca 1871 who married Frances
Evans; Mary Smith (called "Mollie"), b June 15, 1869, d February 9, 1969 who
married J. H. Kimble, b February 4, 1870, d December 10, 1908 and buried in
McClanahan Cemetery; Leonidas Smith who married Bettie Carter; Bertha Smith was
married Joseph Neal; and James W. Smith, b April 18, 1874, d July 16, 1959 and
buried in McClanahan Cemetery.
Elizabeth Smith, b August 14, 1848 in Kentucky, d May
24, 1935 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery ‑ married first to Robert McKenzie in
Anderson County, Texas. They had two daughters: Barbara McKenzie (called
"Bobbie"), who married Thomas Jefferson Parton; and Annie McKenzie, b February
17, 1874, d July 10, 1970 who married Frank P. Davis , b March 5, 1866, d August
28, 1939 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery. Elizabeth (Smith) McKenzie married
second to Nathan J. Morris, b ca 1850 in Louisiana ‑ a son of George Morris, b
1823 in Louisiana, and his wife, Elizabeth, b 1823 in Louisiana. Nathan and
Elizabeth were the parents of George E. Morris, b March 10, 1879, d June 22,
1922 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery ‑ who married Grace E. Thomas, b February
6, 1881, d September 15, 1967 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery ‑ a daughter of
Asa Thomas.
Joseph Smith, b ca 1850 in Kentucky ‑ did not marry.
Azro D. Smith, b 1853, d 1901 and buried in
McClanahan Cemetery ‑ married Derusha McGrew, b 1865, d 1904 and buried in
McClanahan Cemetery. They had Katherine Smith; Floyd Smith; Bettie Smith
who
married Elmer R. Saxon ‑ a son of Joshua and Emma (Varnado) Saxon; and Norma
Smith, who did not marry.
Floyd E. Smith, b March 29, 1854 in Kentucky married
first to Laura Catherine Parsons; married second to Mrs. Easter (Miers) Barton.
Mary Belle Smith (called "Mollie"), b ca 1856 in
Texas‑married William David Barton.
Rufus King Smith, b ca 1859 in Texas ‑ married Emma
Spencer. They had Union Smith, Eunice Smith, Dorcas Smith, Winnie Smith, Francis
Smith, Ruth Smith, and Margie Smith.
The Smiths lived in the area around McClanahan, and
have many family members buried in that Cemetery. There are descendants still in
Falls County, Texas.
