CHARLES SMITH
Charles Smith, b ca 1816 in Tennessee, d ca 1867 in
Falls County, Texas‑was married to Rebecca Marlin, b ca 1820 in Tennessee, date
of death unknown ‑ a daughter of James and Nancy (Taylor) Marlin, who im
migrated to Texas when it was Coahuila, Mexico.
Charles and Rebecca lived at Hog Island (presentday
Roseland), on the Charles Smith Survey near her father. When Falls County was
created in 1850, Charles was elected in 1851 as the first Chief Justice of the
County.
Charles and Rebecca were the parents of ten children
‑ all born in Texas:
Robert E. Smith, b 1838; John H. Smith, b 1840;
Samuel C. Smith, b 1841; Rufus Smith, b 1842 who married his cousin, Mary Ann
Morgan ‑ daughter of William J. and Stacey Ann (Marlin) Morgan; Emily Smith, b
August 9, 1843 ‑ who married April 28, 1864 in Falls County to Larkin A.
Covington, b November 21, 1831 in Tennessee, d December 4, 1908 and buried in
Covington Cemetery near Reagan, Falls County, Texas; Charles Smith, Jr., b 1850;
Thomas Smith, b 1854; and James Smith, b 1857.
Several years after the death of Judge Smith,
Rebecca (Marlin) Smith was married second to a Mr. Stewart, and moved away from
Falls County.
