GEORGE ROBERT SHIELDES

George Robert Shieldes, b 1850 in Georgia, d March 8, 1928 and buried in the Eddy, Texas Cemetery ‑ was a son of Patrick Newton and Margaret Emeline (Whiteside) Shieldes. He came to Falls County, Texas with his parents and siblings in 1880. George Robert Shieldes was married in 1881 to Isabelle ("Belle") Kirkpatrick, b 1859 in Texas, d March 10, 1928 near Eddy ‑ a daughter of William Pinkney Kirkpatrick of Abbeyville, South Carolina, and his wife, Mary Ellen (Moore) Kirkpatrick ‑ a daughter of Robert M. and Marguerite (Whey) Moore of Ireland.

George and Belle were farmers near Eddy, and were members of the First Methodist Church at Eddy. They continued to live on the farm where George's parents settled until they both died in 1928 within two days of each other.

Belle had been engaged to marry Robert R. Olinger, b April 29, 1843, d January 12, 1877, at Mooreville. He had bought a license on January 5, 1877, but was killed after a hold‑up and robbery. The bandit was hiding out when Olinger, a Deputy Constable, approached to arrest him ‑ and the bandit fatally shot him. The marriage license for Olinger's marriage to Belle is in the records of Belle's granddaughter, Lorene (Shieldes) Winner of Cego, Texas. It was four years later when Belle married George Robert Shieldes. They had five children:

Beulah Shieldes, b 1885, d 1891.

Roy Hugh Shieldes, b 1888, d 1974 ‑ married in 1888 to Matilda Huber ‑ a daughter of John Henry and Cunigunda Roming Huber.
