GEORGE WALLACE SHAUNFIELD
George Wallace Shaunfield, b June 10, 1870 in Alabama, d December 14, 1918 in Reagan, Falls County, Texas during the influenza epidemic- a son of Charles Shaunfield, b August 28, 1828, d January 12, 1894, and Leah Frances (Carter) Shaunfield, b September 22, 1840, d May 18, 1924. On October 19, 1898, George Wallace married Margaret Hetherington, b August 28, 1877 at Monroeville, Alabama - the fifth child of John Monroe and Margaret Ann (Broughton) Hetherington. Coming to Reagan at the age of eight, Margaret attended school and grew up on the family farm. George Wallace Shaunfield was a blacksmith and a carpenter. He sold the blacksmith shop and opened a grocery store in the town of Reagan on the street leading to the school, having a workshop behind the grocery store. Wallace had red hair and a quick temper, but was deeply religious, a responsible and family-loving man. When he died, he left his wife, "Maggie," and eight young children. Maggie tried to run the store, the home, the garden, and provide the needs of her children, but was forced to give up the store. The children went to the cotton patch, milked cows to sell dairy products, gardened, and helped their mother can vegetables and fruits. The children also clerked and worked at the Reagan post office. All eight children of George Wallace and Margaret (Hetherington) Shaunfield's children finished high school, and some went on to higher education:
Charles William Shaunfield, b August 30, 1899, married first to Irma Sharp, and on November 23, 1948 married second to Nellie Mae Potts.
Sarah Leah ("Sadie") Shaunfield, b April 11, 1902, married on July 15, 1924 to John Perry Williams.
Lillie Mae Shaunfield, b October 27, 1904, was a school teacher, and never married.
Lila Louella Shaunfield, b February 26, 1907, married on April 7, 1929 to Irving V. Harmon.
Wallace Neal Shaunfield, b September 14, 1909, married on November 27, 1934 to Annie Grace Herridge - a niece of Mrs. George Kile Hetherington.
Nettie Frances Shaunfield, b November 19, 1911, married on June 27, 1942 to Bismark Henry Rohde, b May 9, 1910.
Lee Treadwell Shaunfield, b July 19, 1914, married on December 24, 1940 to Madee Audelia Ramzy.
Mary Margaret Shaunfield, b March 11, 1917, married John Frederick Wusterhausen.
Margaret (Hetherington) Shaunfield spent her last years visiting her children, who had all moved out of Falls County.
