SAMUEL R. SCOTT
Samuel R. Scott, b October 1862 in Polk County, Georgia ‑ was the eldest of
eight children of S. H. and Isabella J. (McGregor)" Scott, natives of Georgia,
who settled in the Travis Community of Falls County, Texas in 1869.
In
1883, S. R. went to Cameron in Milam County, Texas to study law with Major W. M.
McGregor, being admitted to practice in May 1884. The following year, he became
Deputy County Clerk of Falls County serving until 1886, when he established a
partnership with Benjamin Herbert Rice, I, under the firm name,"Rice and Scott."
When
Judge E. C. Stuart died in office, Scott was appointed to fill the office of
County Judge in October 1889. He was subsequently elected to two terms in the
office, reducing the county debt about $35,500 while in office. He was a member
of Lodge No. 3392 K. of H., and of Marlin Lodge No. 16 K. of P.
In
October 1889, Judge Scott was married to Dora Ward, b in Marlin, Falls County,
Texas ‑ a daughter of Sterling Stephen and Sarah A. (Sanders) Ward natives of
Alai Alabama who came to Walker County, Texas in 1838, and to Falls County in
1850. They were of the Baptist faith.
