JOHN PLEASANT SAXON

 

     John Pleasant Saxon, b February 18, 1869 in Falls County, Texas, d February 11, 1948 in Marlin, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin‑was a son of Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth ("Eliza" Millerman) Saxon. On December 29, 1895 in the Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Falls County, John Pleasant Saxon married Lida Woodland, b March 28, 1875 in Falls County, d there May 4, 1958 ‑ a daughter of Henry Woodland and his fifth wife, Lucinda (Barclay) Menefee Woodland.

 

     John Pleasant and Lida (Woodland) Saxon were the parents of seven children ‑ all born in Falls County, Texas:

 

     Thomas Henry Saxon, b September 28, 1896, d December 30, 1898.

 

     Beth Saxon, b July 6, 1898, d April 23, 1952 married in Falls County on September 14, 1919 to Joel Dewitt Loftin, b February 11, 1897, d October 10, 1961. They had three children: Irene Ruth Loftin, b February 13, 1921, married at Price, Rusk County, Texas on March 21, 1948 to Henry Bennett Cooksey, b January 15, 1915, d December 16, 1979 and had Sally Ruth Cooksey who married Alvin Daniel Ray, and James Robert Cooksey; Joe Dewitt Loftin, b January 5, 1924 who is not married; and Harry Saxon Loftin, b April 21, 1927 in Waco, Texas who married August 22, 1959 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Helen Mary Roback.

 

     Edna Saxon, b January 30, 1900 ‑ married May 27, 1922 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas to Charles Benjamin Tillery, b January 16, 1896, d 1981. They had two children: John Paul Tillery, and Dorothy Louise Tillery.

 

     Agnes Saxon, b January 22, 1902 ‑ married August 8, 1923 in Falls County, Texas to Thomas Allen Cook, b August 21, 1895, d June 25, 1979, and had two children: Robert Saxon Cook, b September 1, 1924 married August 29, 1947 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Eva Helen Mills, b May 6, 1925 and had Randall Mills Cook and Barbara Helen Cook, and presently residing in Florida; and Betty Jane Cook, b March 13, 1931 who married August 24, 1952 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Paul Rowland Fowler, b March 30, 1923, and had one daughter, Jane Elizabeth Fowler, b December 20, 1959.

 

     Ernest Wesley Saxon, b September 9, 1903 ‑ is not married.

 

     Alice Saxon, b September 6, 1906 ‑ married December 6, 1930 in Durant, Oklahoma to William Pickens Winzer, b June 18, 1908 and had one son, Jack Warren Winzer, b October 9, 1931 who married July 4, 1952 in Pensacola, Florida to Shirley Murphy and had Cheryl Elizabeth, Debra Kay, and William Randall Winzer.

 

     Helen Saxon, b March 29, 1915 ‑ married July 10, 1943 in Brookshire, Waller County, Texas to Brandon Davison Legett, Jr., b April 18, 1916, and had two daughters: Marilyn Legett, b February 15, 1945 who married June 24, 1967 to Johnny Ray Hall; and Virginia Legett, b August 17, 1948 who married December 10, 1966 to Ronald Jack Maddox.

 

     John Pleasant Saxon was the rural mail carrier from the Reagan Post Office for twenty‑five years, retiring about fourteen years before his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church, while his wife, Lida (Woodland) Saxon, was of the Baptist denomination. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas "because of an ice storm that prevented burial in Blue Ridge Cemetery."
