HENRY G. SANDERS
Henry G. Sanders, b December 6, 1832 in Carroll
County, Mississippi, d June 2, 1902 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin, Texas ‑ was a son of Drury and Rhoda (Coe) Sanders. He was
reared in Mississippi and Limestone County, Texas, and was educated in the log
cabin schoolhouse of the latter. In 1857, Henry G. Sanders relocated in Falls
County, Texas, where he engaged in farming and stock‑raising. In that same year,
he was married in Limestone County, Texas to Mary M. Gage, b June 20, 1835 in
Alabama, d February 5, 1900 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin ‑ a
daughter of Elbert Gage, d in Freestone County, Texas in 1858, and his wife,
Edna (Perkling) Gage, d in Houston County, Texas.
Henry enlisted in 1862 in the Confederate States
Army, serving in Colonel Sweet's Regiment, and participating in the battles of
White River and Cotton Plant. He served principally in Arkansas and Louisiana,
and was also a guard of Union prisoners at Rusk, Texas.
Henry G. and Mary M. (Gage) Sanders had six children:
George E. Sanders ‑ a farmer of Falls County, Texas; Ella Sanders ‑ who married
H. A. Paine ‑ a merchant in Waco, Texas; Julia Sanders who married James Marlin
‑a son of James and Emeline (Paine) Marlin; Rhoda Sanders ‑ who married John
Atkinson ‑ a stockraiser of Falls County; Henry Edward ‑ a Falls County
stockraiser; and Mary Dodie Sanders ‑ who married W. W. Miller, a noted
photographer of Marlin, Texas.
