JOSEPH BYRD ROGERS

 

 

     Joseph Byrd Rogers, b June 6, 1806 in Tennessee, d May 23 or 25, 1867 (his tombstone is broken), and buried in Alto Springs Cemetery in Falls County, Texas - was a brother of Larkin R. Rogers and Caleb Rogers, who both came to Falls County, Texas. He married about 1834 in Alabama to Tabitha E. Massengale, b ca 1816 in Madison County, Alabama, d after the 1880 Census was taken and buried in Limestone County, Texas "about four miles south of Groesbeck, Texas - a daughter of John Cobb Massengale, b January 20, 1792 in Washington County, Tennessee, and his wife, Jane (Rogers) Massengale, b February 20, 1795 in Sevier County, Tennessee.

    

     Joseph Byrd and Tabitha (Massengale) Rogers came to Falls County, Texas after 1855, where he purchased 2,000 acres of land in the Sarah Pillow Survey. It was here that he built his log cabin, and donated land for the Alto Springs Cemetery. His broken tombstone indicates that he was a Methodist, and a Mason. Joseph Byrd and Tabitha had eleven children - all but the youngest born in Alabama:

 

     John W. Rogers, b 1835, d 1914 in Coke County, Texas - married Martha Massengale.

    

     James M. Rogers, b 1836 - married 1868 in Falls County, Texas to Nancy A. Newton.

    

     Martha E. Rogers, b June 11, 1838 - married four times: first to John W. Buttrill, second to William M. Davis, third to Ebenezer R. P. Glass, and fourth to Henry Orum.

    

     William S. Rogers, b in February 1841 - married September 21, 1865 to Anna E. Fenner of Kosse, Texas.

    

     Mary Jane Rogers, b April 11, 1843, d November 10, 1897 - married first to Tom Petty, married second to Samuel Fenner, and married third to M. L. Myatt.

   

     Henry J. Rogers, b 1845, d July 31,1879 near Mustang Prairie, Falls County, Texas, where he was assaulted and died of a fractured skull. He was serving as a Falls County Constable at the time of his death. He married ca 1870 to Louisa M. Warren and had one son, Thomas B. Rogers, b May 12, 1872, d June 29, 1873 and buried in the Alto Springs Cemetery. Henry J. married second on December 29, 1878 to Sarah Jenetta Cardwell, and his daughter by his second marriage, Henrietta Rogers, was born after her father was killed.

    

     Sarah A. Rogers, b August 8, 1847, d July 2, 1927 - married first to Charles Aaron Rogers - son of her Uncle Larkin Rogers and had one son, Charles Aaron Rogers, b November 20, 1867, d in Kosse, Texas July 19, 1892 and buried by his mother in Alto Springs Cemetery; married second to William Paschal Cain.

    

     Frances Minerva Rogers, b January 14, 1850, d May 11, 1935 in Limestone County, Texas - married in Falls County on May 21, 1869 to Julius Alford McDaniel.

    

     Emma Catherine Rogers, b October 14, 1852, d January 6, 1930 in Limestone County, Texas - married first to George Rutledge Pringle, and married second on May 11, 1879 to James E. Warren.

    

     Joseph Larkin Rogers, b October 23, 1854, d May 2, 1934 at Burkeville, Newton County, Texas - married February 8, 1877 in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas to Mary Leona Jones - daughter of William Calloway and Sarah Broomfield (Pringle) Jones.

    

     Robert Elonza Rogers, b February 6, 1859 in Texas, d August 7, 1934 in Young County, Texas- married February 1,1883 in Limestone County, Texas to LouAnna Irene Patterson - daughter of William and Sarepta (Harlan) Patterson.

    

     Alfred Massengale - a brother of Tabitha (Massengale) Rogers - came to Texas on a wagon train with the family of his sister and brother-in-law.

     Joseph B. Rogers was the father of Sallie A. Rogers who married William Paschal Cain (my great grand uncle) son of Thomas J. Cain.  It includes his date of death. May 23 or 25, 1867 (stone was broken)
