HENRY THOMAS ROGERS

 

 

     Henry Thomas Rogers, b July 9, 1853 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas, d October 17, 1927 and buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin, Texas - was a son of Nathaniel Franklin and Tennessee (Huffman) Rogers. On December 14,1875 in Falls County, Henry was married to Mary Elizabeth Marlin, b March 8, 1856 near Reagan, d March 9, 1922 and buried in Calvary Cemetery - a daughter of Rufus Anderson and Martha Louise (Gentry) Marlin, and a granddaughter of John and Mary Celia (Menefee) Marlin, and of Samuel and Emeline (Payne) Gentry .

     Henry Thomas Rogers remained at working on the farm and attending local school alternately. He graduated from Tehuacana Commercial College in 1874, after which he clerked for Mr. A. Hemphill of Reagan for eight months, and then returned to the farm for a short period. In 1875, after his marriage, Henry Thomas bought out Mr. Hemphill and engaged in business for three years. In 1879, once again he farmed for a year, and then was in business until 1881 with Mr. Andrew Peyton, and then went to work for the Chilton and Cheeves store where he continued to be employed. Henry Thomas and Mary Elizabeth (Gentry) Rogers were the parents of four children:

     Ira E. Rogers - no further information.

     Pearl Rogers - married Eugene Wyche. No further information.

     Mirth Rogers, b December 12, 1880 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas, d July 4, 1961- married Campbell L. ("Cam") Fannin, b May 1, 1880, d October 15, 1949 and both buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin, Texas. No further information.

     Grace Rogers - married a Mr. Roberts. No further information.

     Henry Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Rogers were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he was a Mason and a Knight of Honor.

     On July 6, 1887, an agreement, written in legalistic language, was signed between H. T. Rogers and D. L. Wardlaw - with T. A. Cheeves as a witness:

     "Regan, Texas, July 6, 1887: Know all men by these presents, That we, H. T. Rogers and D. L. Wardlaw, have this day resolved to quit the use of Tobacco in any form whatever. Now if either of the said H. T. Rogers or D. L. Wardlaw shall deviate from the said resolutions, by chewing, smoking, or dipping snuff, the one so doing will on demand pay the other one (1) fine gold Watch to cost not less than Seventy-five dollars ($75.00). The conditions of this agreement to stand in full force and effect for the period of 5 years.”

     It is not known whether either ever got the “fine gold watch.”
