CULLEN JAMES ROGERS

 

 

     Cullen James Rogers, b May 29, 1921 at Mart Limestone County, Texas - was the youngest of twelve children of John Harvey Rogers, b November 19, 1866 at Personville, Limestone County, Texas, C December 22, 1934 at Mart, Texas, who was married on August 5, 1894 in Limestone County to Mary Elizabeth Leach, b March 17, 1876 at Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas, d July 19,1959 at Mart - a daughter of Hugh Archibald and Lydia Ann (Adair) Leach - natives of Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Cullen's grandfather, Allen Jefferson Rogers, b June 18, 1831 in Perry County, Alabama, d December 14,1925 in Limestone County, Texas - married first on May 23, 1852 to Mary Catherine Owens, b July 1, 1832 in Alabama d November 11,1874 in Limestone County, Texas. The couple moved to Texas in 1856, and were the parents of eight children - including Cullen's father, John Harvey Rogers. Allen Jefferson Rogers enlisted in the Confederate States Army, serving under Colonel Bass during the Civil War.

     Cullen James Rogers was an "All-State" High School football player in 1937, and was on the South, west Conference football and baseball teams, receiving his degree at Texas A&M University. He served in World War II, and played football for the Pittsburg Steelers after the war. His name has been placed in the A&M Sports Hall of Fame.

     On February 13, 1945 in Marlin, Falls County Texas, Cullen was married to Doris Davison-Barganier, b December 26, 1922 in Reagan, Falls County Texas - a daughter of Clinton Gordon and Eloise (Womack) Davison. Doris was an infant when her  mother died, and she was reared by her father's sister and her husband, Verna (Davison) and James Gerden Barganier. Doris grew up at Highlands Mansion, and was a graduate of Marlin High School and Baylor University.

     In 1849, Cullen and Doris bought the Sinclair Agency in Marlin, and later purchased the A. H. Peterson Insurance Company, which was sold in 1981 to Kenneth and Sharon Tomlinson. Cullen is now engaged in the Apartment and Motel Business in Marlin. He is a Deacon in the First Baptist Church in Marlin, and he and Doris have taught a Youth Sunday School Class for many years. Cullen is active in the political affairs of Marlin, and they participate in many of the civic and social affairs of their community.

     Cullen James and Doris (Davison-Barganier) Rogers were the parents of three children:

     Cullen James Rogers, Jr. (called "Jimmy"), b September 17, 1947 - is a graduate of Marlin High School and The University of Texas, Austin. He resides in San Antonio, Texas.

     John Davison Rogers, b October 3, 1949 in Marlin - attended “Ol” Miss. University, and graduated from North Texas University in Denton, after serving four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Janice Hughes, b December 11, 1949 in Santa Fe, Mexico - a daughter of Isaac Newton and Alice (Greathouse) Hughes. John and Janice have Cullen Greathouse Rogers, b February 4, 1977.

     Elizabeth Rogers (called "Beth"), b July 9, 1952 in Marlin - was a 1974 graduate of Baylor University, Waco. She married Roger Allen Nutt, b December 11, 1954 in Plainview, Texas - a son of William Charles and Jimmie (Horton) Nutt. Roger is a 1977 graduate of Texas A&M University, and is manager of the Williams Feed Store in Marlin. He and Beth have two children: Davison William Nutt, b May 15, 1983; and Elizabeth Katherine Nutt, b January 14, 1985.

     One of Cullen's brothers, Owens Adair Rogers (deceased), and his wife, Mary Lee, moved to Marlin, Texas, where she taught in the Business Department of Marlin High School for several years. Owens was a Texas A&M University graduate and owned the Sinclair Agency in Mart, Texas before moving to Marlin.
