GRICE ARNET ("JACK") RICHARDSON

 

 

     Grice Arnett Richardson (called "Jack"), b October 18,1895 at Stranger, d October 19, 1974 and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery - was the only child of William Jr., Bryant and Elizabeth (Arnett) Richardson, III, natives of Sumpter County, Alabama and Falls County, Texas respectively.

     Jack attended the school at Stranger, and was f member of the Stranger Baptist Church as a child ant young man. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I, where he served as a Sergeant.

     On June 30, 1920, Jack was married to AgneE Margueritte Harlan, b February 17, 1899 at Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas - a daughter of John Luther and Elizabeth ("Bettie" McGlasson) Harlan Agnes was reared in the built by her grandfather, Thomas D. Harlan; and she and Jack lived there after her father's death.

     Jack was appointed the Rural Mail Carrier out 01 Reagan, through Blue Ridge and Stranger, and served in that capacity for many years - ending his career as Postmaster in the Reagan Post Office. He also managed the farm, and raised cattle. When the couple returned to Blue Ridge in 1933 - after living at Stranger and in Marlin, Agnes had her membership in the Stranger Baptist Church, which she had joined after her marriage to Jack, transferred back to her church at Blue Ridge, where Jack also became affiliated.

     Agnes attended Baylor Belton College for Women, where she studied music and piano - later taking a course at Baylor University in Waco. She taught piano in Stranger, Blue Ridge, Reagan, and Marlin; and was Pianist and Organist at the Blue Ridge Baptist Church.

     Jack served the Blue Ridge Baptist Church as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Church Treasurer, and Caretaker of the building and church yard. He always had the building warm during cold weather, before time for Sunday School.

     The Richardsons had a that invited fellowship, and was the gathering place for family, friends, and ministers. Besides their three children, they reared her niece, Janet Price-daughter of James and Jewell (Harlan) Price, who married Aubry Stone.

Their children were:

     Billy John Richardson, b November 13, 1924 - a graduate of Texas A&M University - has been Postmaster at Reagan, Falls County, Texas since his father's retirement. He operates the family farm, is active in the Old Settlers and Veterans Association of Falls County, and makes Rock Jewelry and decorative items, as an avocation. He married January 10, 1951 to Melba Sue Henson, and they adopted David Richard- son and Dana (Richardson) Hunter, who has three daughters. Sue is a Registered Nurse, and is employed by the Marlin Independent School District. They are active in the First Baptist Church of Marlin.

     Betty Jo Richardson, b September 26, 1928, d September 3, 1984 and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery - married October 12, 1957 to Cecil Clifton Magers, and they lived in Dallas, Texas, where they both worked.

     Marinel Richardson, b February 14, 1931 - obtained her degree in Nursing, and is a Lt. Colonel (Retired) from the U.S. Air Force. She now resides in San Antonio, Texas, and has not married.

     Since the death of her husband, Agnes (Harlan Richardson has continued to reside in the family in Blue Ridge, and continues actively in the affairs of Blue Ridge Baptist Church.
