SELWYN PERCIVAL RICE, M.D.
Selwyn Percival Rice, M.D., b November 13, 1854 in Clinch County,
Georgia, d September 22, 1929 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in
Calvary Cemetery in Marlin - was a son of Dr. Ulysses Ashford and Mary Josephine
(Buckner) Rice He graduated from Mercer College in Macon, Georgia in 1869, and
worked in the drugstores in Calvert and Hearne before entering the Medical
College in Louisville, Kentucky, where he received his medical degree in 1876.
That same year, Dr. Rice began his medical practice in Marlin.
On November 27, 1879, Dr. Selwyn P. Rice was married to Martha John
Anderson, b September 2, 1856, d September 22, 1940 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin - a daughter of William and Deborah (Barton) Anderson, of
Calvert.
Dr. Rice was, for a time, joint owner of a sanitarium in Marlin, and the
last twenty years of his life, he was a member of the staff of Torbett
Sanitarium and Diagnostic Clinic. He served for many years as the local surgeon
for I. and G.N. and H. and T.C. Railroads, was on the State Board of Health
several terms, and took an active part in the various medical societies, serving
as President of the Falls County Medical Society, the Central Texas District
Medical Society, and Texas Medical Association.
During World War I, Dr. Rice rendered valuable
service as a member of the Council on Medical Defense, Medical Section, for
Texas; and he served as chairman of the Section on Medicine and Hygiene of the
State Council of Defense.
The Rices were members of First Methodist Church in Marlin, and he was
very active in the management of the church, as well as a contributor of funds.
He gave a stained glass window in honor of his wife. He was a Mason, and a
member of the Knights of Pythias.
Dr. Selwyn Percival and Martha John ("Mattie" Anderson) Rice had six
children - all born in Marlin, Falls County, Texas:
Selwyn Percival Rice, Jr., b 1880, d 1883 and buried in Calvary Cemetery
in Marlin.
William Anderson Rice, b October 28, 1883, d in 1918 and buried in
Calvary Cemetery.
Evelyn Augusta Rice, b August 2, 1886, d March 20, 1976 - married April
24, 1912 to Albert Mutter Hutchins, b 1884, d 1920 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery. They had one son, Selwyn Percival Rice Hutchins, M.D., who married
Elizabeth Painter, of Austin, Texas, and had Elizabeth Hutchins who married Jack
C. Cunningham, Jr., Debora Anderson Hutchins, and William Albert Hutchins.
Evelyn (Rice) Hutchins was active in Marlin civic affairs for many years.
Melville Cramer Rice, born and died in 1891 and buried in Calvary
Cemetery in Marlin.
Herbert Buckner Rice, b September 28, 1892, d March 24, 1961 - married
June 17, 1917 to Irys Bassett.
Deborah Ann Rice - was stillborn in 1897, and buried in Calvary Cemetery
in Marlin.
