RICHARD ALLEN THOMAS REED

 

     Richard Allen Thomas Reed (called "Tom"), b July 25, 1857 in Falls County, Texas, d January 24,1924 and buried in McClanahan Cemetery in Falls County - was a son of Thomas Dudley and Sarah (Oakes) Reed. Richard Allen Thomas Reed married first ca 1880 to Sarah Minerva ("Minnie") McClanahan, b 1862 in Anderson County, Texas, d 1897 in Falls County, Texas - a daughter of Thomas R. and Sarah Julia Ann (Black) McClanahan, who married March 26,1861 in Anderson County, Texas and had only two children, Sarah Minerva ("Minnie") and a son, Lee, be- fore Thomas R., McClanahan died - probably in the Civil War. His widow, Julia, married third on February 17, 1876 in Anderson County to M. R. Brown, but she died before 1880. Thomas R. McClanahan was a younger brother of John Rice McClanahan, who married Kate Smith, for whom the McClanahan Community of Falls County, Texas was named - and it was with her Uncle John that young "Minnie" resided when she met and married Richard Allen Thomas Reed. After her death, he married second to a widow, Mrs. Emma (Adams) Oakden.

     Richard Allen Thomas Reed had seven children by his first wife, Minnie; and two by his second wife, Emma:

     John A. Reed, b March 6, 1882, d January 28, 1930, and buried in McClanahan Cemetery. No further information.

     Sarah Oakes Reed ("Sallie"), b ca 1884 - married November 20, 1900 to John Rufus Ogden, of Cedar

Springs in Falls County, Texas - purchased a ranch in Mexico, where several of their children were born, before returning to Falls County.

     Lee Henry Reed, b January 1, 1887 at McClanahan, Falls County, Texas, d February 19, 1962 in Houston, Harris County, Texas - married Gertrude Jane McAndrew, b February 13, 1893 in Tennessee, d March 25, 1976 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - and both buried in McClanahan Cemetery.

     Thomas Stanley Reed, b February 1, 1890, d March 14, 1969, and buried in Calvary Cemetery- married Hattie M. (maiden name unknown), b June 13, 1890, d October 8, 1946, and also buried in Calvary Cemetery. They had three children: Grady Lee Reed, b September 3, 1913, d February 18, 1970, and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery at Marlin - married Pauline C. Maroney, and served in Palau and the Philippines with the U.S. Navy during World War II. They are said to have had two children. The only daughter of Thomas Stanley and Hattie M. Reed, Imo Jean Reed, married William Eugene Connor (called "Kujoe"), a son of William Mack and Lillie Mae (Bland) Connor - both natives of Falls County, and had five children: Jean Ann, b August 22,1946 - married James R. Jones, has two sons, and resides in Marlin; Larry Stanley, b March 3, 1948; Sherry Mae, b November 24, 1950 - married Mark F. Dornon and resides in Marlin; Theresa Gail, b April 30, 1953 - married a Mr. Drake and resides in Belton, Texas; and Kathy Lynn, b October 29, 1955- married a Mr. Lehmann and resides in St. Paul, Falls County, Texas. Imo Jean and "Kujoe" Connor now reside in Lake Limestone, Texas. The third child of

Thomas Stanley and Hattie M. Reed was Thomas Allen Reed, b December 25, 1919, d November 17, 1978 and buried in Calvary Cemetery by his parents. He served during World War II with the U.S. Army. Thomas Stanley Reed was one of the Board of Directors of the Marlin National Bank when it was organized April 20, 1934.

     Frank Allen Reed, b January 17, 1892, d December 7, 1974 and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin, Texas - married first to Mable Whaley, b December 20, 1892, d December 7, 1946 - daughter of Waller Dea and Willie Belle (Tacker) Whaley; and married second to Lydia Lea Stahl - a daughter of an Arkansas Dentist who had relocated in Yoakum, Texas: Dr. S. S. Stahl and wife, Nellie Geraldine (McGowan) Stahl. By his first wife, he had two children, and by his second wife, Frank had four children.

     Katherine Reed - married a Mr. Gamble and moved to Sterling City, Texas; had three daughters, Mabel, Allie, and one who married a Mr. Pollard and for years had an antique business in west Marlin. Mr. Gamble died many years ago, and Katherine (Reed) Gamble returned to Marlin, where she died and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin.

     Gina Reed - married, moved to California, and had issue-among them a daughter, Nettie. No further information.

     By his second wife, Emma (Adams), Richard Allen Thomas Reed had two children:

     Hiram Reed - no further information.

     Carolyn Reed - married Mr. McClain, and her daughter, Carolyn McClain, married Dr. Walter L. Reese, who had his practice in Marlin, Texas before relocating in Waco.

     When the original Marlin National Bank was organized in 1900, Richard Allen Reed was elected to the presidency of that institution - a position he held for twenty-three years and re-elected for his twenty-fourth term just before his death. He was a member of the American and the Texas Bankers' Associations. Al- though best known as a banker, he was also a builder, businessman, an agriculturist, and stockman. He was president of the Reagan Mercantile Company, and was an investor in other business establishments in the area. In the late 1890's, he served on the Falls County Democratic Executive Committee; served as County Commissioner of Falls County - Marlin Precinct, from 1900 - 1902; and as one of a special board of commissioners responsible for supervising expenditure of a half-million-dollar good roads bond issue.
