JAMES W. REED, M.D.

 

 

     James W. Reed, M.D., b October 28,1847, d December 2, 1883 at Durango and buried in Union Cemetery there, received his medical degree from The University of Louisville, Kentucky on March 3, 1876.

     On April 29, 1879, Dr. Reed was licensed by the Medical Examining Board at Waco, McLennan County, to practice medicine in Texas; and he subsequently registered on September 2, 1879, in Falls County.

On January 4, 1877, Dr. Reed was married to Frances T. Buster - related to W. P. Buster, who had no tombstone, but is indicated by his wife's as Annie Buster, wife of W. P. Buster, b June 22, 1839, d April 17, 1911, and buried in Union Cemetery at Durango. Other relatives may have been those also buried in Union Cemetery: F. B. Buster, b August 20,1841, d June 1, 1883; and Mary Ann Buster, b December 31, 1852, d December 1, 1888.

     Dr. Reed began his medical practice at "West Falls," later called "Durango" and they were the parents of four sons before his death:

     Infant son, born and died June 22, 1878, and buried at Durango.

     Erasmus David Reed, b ca 1880 - married Katherine Gwyn - a daughter of Henry Clay Gwyn, b 1845, d 1930, and his wife, Julia Ann Gwyn, b 1846, d 1904, and buried at Durango. Erasmus and Katherine had three children: X. B. Reed, b 1902 at Durango, d November 12, 1980 at Bay town, who married Ouida Belle Farmer, b September 16, 1904 at Durango - a daughter of George Lee and Vista (Miles) Farmer; Irene Reed, b April 11, 1907 at Durango - married Hardy Carter Hicks, b September 4, 1906, d November 11, 1980 and buried at Durango; and Inez Reed, b April 11, 1907 - married Irvin Morgan, b April 10, 1905, d August 31, 1977, and buried at Durango.

     R. D. Reed, b June 9, 1882, d October 31,1918- married Katie (maiden name unknown), b April 2, 1883, d March 6, 1936, and buried at Durango.

     William A. Reed, b February 2, 1884 (two months after his father's death), d November 24, 1942 - married Bertha B. (maiden name unknown), b October 9, 1884, d October 31, 1978 and buried at Durango. They had Nell (Reed) Norvell, b March 7, 1910; Amy Reed, b April 27, 1914, d November 17, 1921; and Jeraldine Reed, b June 7, 1924, d October 1, 1924 and buried in Durango. Other issue are unknown.

     It is not known when or where Dr. Reed's widow, Frances T. (Buster) Reed, died, as she was not buried by him.
