WILLIAM CARROLL POWERS
William Carroll Powers, b June 7, 1816 in Tennessee, d June 1, 1866 in
Falls County, Texas and buried in the Powers Family Cemetery near Reagan, Texas
- was a son of Elijah P. and Catherine (McSwarin) Powers, who came to Texas in
1834 with their six sons.
William was wounded in the January 16, 1839 battle with the Indians on
the Brazos River, following the Morgan Massacre on January 1, 1839. William's
brother, Andrew Jackson Morgan was killed in the same battle on January 16th.
About 1842, William Carroll Powers was married to Eliza Jane Curry, b
December 23, 1823 in Alabama, d January 5, 1869 in Falls County, Texas near
present-day Reagan, and buried in Powers Family Cemetery - a daughter of Thomas
F. and Matilda (Rogers) Curry, who registered in Robertson's Colony in the Fall
of 1834.
William Carroll Powers was a farmer and stockman on the 2,214 acres (half
league) settled by his father in 1844. He and Eliza had eleven children, with
only five living to adulthood:
Andrew Jackson Powers, b January 3,1843, d August 1846 and buried in the
Powers Family Cemetery.
Mary Powers (called "Mollie"), b 1844 in Falls County, Texas - married
first to J. P. Watkins, who died in 1867. She married second on April 13, 1871
to A. S. Cabiness.
Thomas Powers, b August 14, 1846 in Falls County, Texas, d September 1846
and buried in Powers Family Cemetery.
William L. Powers, b September 4, 1847, d December 21,1869 and buried in
Powers Family Cemetery.
Lucinda Powers, b 1849-died young. Susan Catherine Powers, b October 19,
1851 in Falls County, Texas, d August 28, 1852 and buried in Powers Cemetery.
Hellen Powers, b December 1852 - married June 25, 1867
to R. A. Steele.
Charles Powers, b 1857 - no further information. Laura Lee Powers, b July
4,1861, d March 1872 and buried in Powers Family Cemetery.
Joseph Powers, b 1863 - no information.
Martha J. Powers, b December 28,1865, d June 3, 1866 and buried in Powers
Family Cemetery.
