TRAVIS A. POWERS

 

 

     Travis A. Powers, b November 23, 1885 in Falls County, Texas, d May 8, 1952 and buried in Hope Cemetery - was the son of Francis Marion and Elmina (Watters) Powers, Jr. He married Emma Rhodes, b September 8, 1884, d November 1, 1968 and buried in Hope Cemetery - a daughter of Joseph E. and Mary (Binnicker) Rhodes.

     Travis engaged in agricultural pursuits in the Otto Community of Falls County, where he and Emma had four children, with only two surviving to adult- hood:

     Paul Durward Powers, b September 20, 1913 in Falls County - was a graduate of The University of Texas, and worked for Texaco Oil Company. He served in World War II on Guam, and had the rank of Master Sergeant. On December 30, 1938, he was married to Mary Virginia Nettles, b July 5, 1917 - a daughter of Timothy Dargan and Mary Delores (Baker) Nettles, natives of Falls County. Mary received her Master's degree from The University of Houston, was a supervisor in the Houston Independent School District, and taught at The University of Houston. She is a Past President of the First Presbyterian Women of the Church in Marlin; belongs to Delta Kappa Gamma, the DAR, Eastern Star, and several local clubs. Paul is a Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Marlin, and a Mason. They had one son, Michael Paul Powers, b September 14, 1942, who is an assistant principal in the Houston Independent School District, and resides in Missouri City, Texas.

     Two Infant Daughters died.

     Ray Doyle Powers, b June 17, 1921 in Falls County, Texas, d December 31, 1974 - married Mrs. Ethel M. (Brothers) Martyr - a daughter of Talmadge and Sadie (Hayes) Brothers, of Stranger, Falls County, Texas, who had a son by her previous marriage, Gary Martyr 1 who was reared by Ray.
