LEWIS BARKER POWERS

 

 

     Lewis Barker Powers, b May 31, 1820 in Tennessee, d September 18, 1869 at Wilderville and buried in the Powers Family Cemetery - was a son of Elijah and Catherine (McSwarin) Powers, Sr. - natives of Tennessee, who came to Texas in 1834, settling at Nashville in Milam County.

     Lewis served in the Texas Army, and was an Indian fighter - being a participant in the January 10, 1839 battle against Chief Jose Maria under Captain Benjamin Bryant, along with two of his brothers, William Carroll Powers and Andrew Jackson Powers.

     Lewis Barker Powers was married ca 1847 to Nancy Caroline Barron, b October 13, 1826 in Arkansas, d July 3, 1871 at Wilderville - a daughter of Captain Thomas H. Barron and his first wife, Elizabeth (Carnall) Barron. Lewis and Nancy Caroline were listed on the Limestone County, Texas census in 1850, where they lived near his family close to present-day Falls County.

     Among the children of Lewis and Nancy Caroline (Barron) Powers were:

     John W. M. Powers, b October 29,1848 in Texas, d August 10, 1886 in Wichita, Kansas - married Susan Roberts, b 1851 in Grimes County, Texas, buried in Woodland Cemetery at Rosebud, Texas - a daughter of Thomas Roberts and his second wife, Narcissa (Cartwright) Slater Pierson Roberts.

     Sarah Catherine Powers, b 1849 in Texas, d January 23, 1869 at Wilderville - married J. K. Davis.

     Thomas Powers, b 1850 in Texas, d before 1860 - was run over by a wagon.

     Henry Lewis Powers, b ca 1852 - married A. Rebecca Asbury, and they had two sons and two daughters who died as infants and were buried in the Powers Family Cemetery. One son, Jack Powers, survived to adulthood, and moved away.

     Elijah F. Powers, b November 1, 1856 in Texas, d February 26, 1880 and buried in Powers Family Cemetery.

     The Powers family in West Falls County have left their mark on Falls County through the large ranching estate of their son, John, and the Powers Chapel Cemetery - named in their honor.
