FRANCIS MARION POWERS

 

 

     Francis Marion Powers, b August 14, 1826 in Tennessee, d January 14, 1877 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas and buried in Powers Family Cemetery - was a son of Texas pioneers, Elijah P. and Catherine (McSwarin) Powers, who settled near present-day Reagan in 1844.

     On May 4, 1850 in Brazos County, Texas, Francis was married to Elizabeth Penelope Curry, b September 9, 1830, dafter 1892 in Falls County, Texas and buried in Powers Family Cemetery. Francis farmed and raised stock in the Reagan area all his married life. After his death, Elizabeth was married second to David Webb, who disposed of much of the family property, ac- cording to her children.

     Francis Marion and Elizabeth Penelope (Curry) Powers were the parents of eight children:

     Susan C. Powers, b October 19, 1851 in Falls County, Texas, d August 28, 1852 and buried in Powers Family Cemetery.

     Joseph A. Powers, b October 4, 1853 in Falls County, Texas - married in January 1873 to Rebecca A. Thomas - a daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Ingram) Thomas.

     Elijah Thomas Powers,b ca 1855 in Falls County, Texas - married December 13, 1879 to Lee Bennett, b January 3, 1858 in Mississippi, d February 14, 1910 near Otto, Falls County, Texas, and buried in Hope Cemetery - a daughter of Legro and Harriett (Robertson) Bennett, of Mississippi.

     Samuel Houston Powers, b May 6, 1858 in Falls County, Texas, d April 21, 1926 and buried in Hope Cemetery in Falls County - married Elizabeth Wyche, b January 29,1866, d January 25,1944.

     Mary Powers, b September 16, 1860, d March 22, 1922 and buried in Waite Cemetery in Reagan, Falls County, Texas - married ca 1882 to William Edward Waite, b April 27, 1856 in Mississippi, d December 5, 1916 at Reagan - a son of Dr. Samuel J. and Lena Waite, of Scott County, Mississippi.

     Francis Marion Powers, Jr. (called "Frank"), b July 16, 1865, d July 9, 1931 and buried in Hope Cemetery in Falls County, Texas - married Elmina Watters, b November 4, 1867, d August 19, 1935 - a daughter of John W. and Martha (Seay) Watters, both buried in Hope Cemetery.

     Theodore Powers (called "Tabor"), b August 20, 1867, d March 10, 1872 and buried in the Powers Family Cemetery near Reagan, Falls County, Texas.

John L. Powers, b ca 1872 - was living in Reagan, Texas in 1892. No further information.

     Francis Marion Powers, Sr. enlisted in the Confederate States Army, where he served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1864, returning in the Fall of 1864. He was only thirteen years old when his brothers were engaged in the Indian Battles, and was even younger during the fight for Texas Independence.
