ELIJAH P. POWERS
Elijah P. Powers, Sr., b April 24, 1792 in Tennessee, d November 1850
near present-day Reagan, Falls County, Texas and buried in the Powers Family
Cemetery located on his farm - was married to Catherine McSwarin, b September
17, 1789, d September 1846 near present-day Reagan and buried in the Powers
Family Cemetery. They came to Coahuila, Mexico (later Texas) in 1834,
registering in Robertson's Colony with their six sons.
Elijah and Catherine moved east to Dunn's Fort in Robertson County during
the Run-Away Scrape, but their sons were in the Indian Battles of present-day
Falls County in 1839.
In 1844, the family settled permanently in Present-day Falls County,
where he owned a half-league of land (2,214 acres). After Catherine (McSwarin)
Powers died, Elijah married second to Sarah Huffman, b July 12, 1815, d June 15,
1863 - the widow of Solomon Huffman, whose children, Henry b 1831, Blunt
Richard, b May 3, 1833, d October 30, 1854; Jane, Nicholas W., b February 1840,
d March 11, 1879; Elisa, and Safronia Huffman were living in his household.
Sarah's eldest daughter, Lenora Huffman, b 1829, had married Alfred A. Drake,
and lived nearby. Another daughter, Tennessee Huffman, b 1835 in Tennessee, was
married in 1850 to Nathaniel Franklin Rogers, b 1828 in Alabama - the eldest
child of Larkin and Mary (Aycock) Rogers.
Elijah P. and Catherine (McSwarin) Powers had SIX sons:
William Carroll Powers, b June 7, 1816, d June 1, 1866 at present-day
Reagan in Falls County, Texas - married Eliza Jane Curry, b ca 1824 in Alabama -
a daughter of Thomas F. and Matilda (Rogers) Curry, pioneers to the State of
Coahuila, Mexico (later Texas).
Lecuffa Powers, b ca 1818 in Tennessee, d before 1850.
Lewis Barker Powers, b May 31, 1820, d September 18,1869 in Falls County,
Texas - married Nancy Caroline Barron.
Andrew Jackson Powers, b ca 1822 in Tennessee, d January 1839 - married
Annette Wheelock.
Elijah J. Powers, b December 23,1823, d January 1861 in Falls County,
Texas. He married Winnie Taylor, b April 31, 1839, d February 22, 1901 and
buried in Covington Cemetery near Reagan, Texas. Winnie (Taylor) Powers married
second to Pleasant M. Beal.
Francis Marion Powers, b August 14, 1826, d January 14, 1877 - married
May 4, 1850 to Elizabeth Penelope Curry, b ca 1832 - a daughter of Thomas F. ant
Matilda (Rogers) Curry.
