SAMUEL PRICE PEYTON

 

 

     Samuel Price Peyton, b January 17, 1849, d July 1, 1921 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - was a son of Charles Lewis and Agnes (Stuart) Peyton of "Richlands" Plantation, Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia - descendants of several colonial Virginia families.

     Samuel was educated in his state, later working as a civil engineer for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. In 1874, he came to Reagan, Texas where his older brother, Andrew Peyton, had already settled. Samuel was engaged as a clerk in the mercantile business that Andrew and Dr. McDowell had established, and which he owned after Andrew's death. Subsequently, he purchased some Brazos River bottomland of his own.

     In 1887, Samuel Price Peyton married Richie Caroline Hollingsworth, b 1863 in Louisiana, d 1942 in Marlin - a daughter of Dr. Richard Collins Hollingsworth of Louisiana, who died in 1863 while in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, and his wife, Sarah Parmelia (Scogin) Hollingsworh. Richie's mother was married second in 1869 in Falls County, Texas to Dr. Lycurgus Dudley Forbes of the Stranger Community in East Falls County, and Richie was reared on the Forbes farm.

     Samuel and Richie lived in Reagan after their marriage until 1896 when he was elected Falls County Tax Assessor and Collector - serving two terms in that position. He was associated with the Marlin Oil Company, and had other business interests. He was a Democrat, a Master Mason, a member of the Knights of Honor, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marlin. Samuel and Richie Peyton purchased the built by J. W. Perkins on Watson Street, which was later rebuilt, and is owned today by a son, Andrew H. Peyton.

     Samuel Price and Richie Caroline (Hollingsworth) Peyton were the parents of five children:

Samuel Lewis Peyton, b October 31, 1888 in Reagan, Texas, d February 6, 1956 in Marlin, Texas - was never married.

     Mary M. Peyton, b June 10, 1890 in Reagan, Texas, d December 26, 1978 in Marlin, buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin. Mary taught school before her marriage to James David Seale, b 1882, d 1954, buried Calvary Cemetery.

     Richie Peyton, b May 17, 1893 in Reagan, Texas, d August 7,1959 in Marlin, buried Calvary Cemetery. Richie taught in the Marlin Independent School District.

     Louise Peyton, b September 12, 1895 in Reagan, Texas, d January 3, 1971 in Marlin, buried Calvary Cemetery. Louise taught school in several county schools, including Otto and in the Marlin Independent School District.

     Andrew Hollingsworth Peyton, b October 20, 1908 in Marlin, Texas, married on August 7, 1931 to Julia M. Monahan.
