JOHN CALHOUN PEEVEY, I
John Calhoun Peevey, I, b July 16, 1838; in Madison County, Alabama, d
April 1, 1928 at Cedar Springs and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Falls
County, Texas - was the seventh of nine children of Robert William and Susan
(Cramer) Peevey, who settled in Alabama at an early date. Susan died several
years before her husband's death in 1857. Their children were: William W.
Peevey, who settled in Ellis County, Texas; Elias W. Peevey, of Travis County,
Texas; Samantha Peevey who married R. O. Brazelton and settled at Moody, Texas;
Martha Peevey who married P. Miller, and remained in Alabama; Mary C. Peevey, b
January 19, 1832 in Alabama, d December 31, 1915 and buried in Carolina Cemetery
near Durango, Falls County, Texas, who married first to William J. Wright, b ca
1830 in Alabama, and had Susan Wright, b 1853 in Texas, Cora J. Wright, b 1856
in Texas, William P. Wright, b 1859 in Texas, and Walter Wright, b 1861 in
Texas, and married second on May 31, 1866 in Falls County to Jesse T. Hedrick,
of Durango; Caroline Peevey who married a Mr. McGaha of Alabama; and twins -
James K. P. Peevey, b 1841, d at Pea Ridge, Arkansas while with the Confederate
States Army during the Civil War, and George M. Peevey, b 1841, d 1890 in Glove,
New Mexico.
After the Civil War, John Calhoun Peevey went back to Alabama, and then
returned with a widowed sister to Texas in late 1865, settling in Falls County,
where he engaged in stock business, and buying land until he owned 1,400 acres.
In 1874, John Calhoun Peevey was married first to Narcissa Smith of
Mississippi - a daughter of Dudley Smith. She died in 1877, and
John was married second on November 28, 1883 to Ella Bloxom, b October 4, 1862,
d February 2, 1954 - a daughter of Leslie and Martha M. (Hobdy) Bloxom, natives
of Alabama. One of Ella's eleven siblings, Martha Bloxom, married in Falls
County on December 19, 1884 to Dr. W. M. Shankle, of Chilton, Texas.
The known children of John Calhoun and Ella (Bloxom) Peevey were:
Martha Lou Peevey (called "Mattie"), b August 3, 1888-married in 1912 in
Falls County, Texas to R. V. Walker. They purchased their marriage license
February 28, 1912.
Katherine H. Peevey (called "Kate"), b September 16, 1890 - married
August 3, 1911 in Falls County, Texas to E. A. Landrum.
A Daughter Peevey - married C. E. Newton, and in 1979, was residing in
San Antonio, Texas.
John Calhoun Peevey, Jr. (called "Boss"), b November 15, 1898, d
September 10, 1979 and buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin, Falls County,
Texas- married April 29, 1923 in Falls County, Texas to Clara Eliza Tomlinson
(called "Nida") - a daughter of William Augustus and Harriet (Peoples)
Tomlinson.
