JAMES WILLIS PACE

 

 

     James Willis Pace, b ca 1840 in Newton, Mississippi, d 1921 in Falls County, Texas and buried there in Hoolia Cemetery - was a son of James Dempsey and Amelia Lucy (Gregory) Pace. James Willis and three brothers served in the Confederate States Army: John Pace was killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia; William J. Pace was wounded at the Battle of the Wilder- ness - both in Newton Riflemen, 13th Mississippi Regiment; and James Willis Pace served in Company E, Parron's Battalion, Ferguson's Calvary - fighting in Mississippi; Rome, Georgia; and was in Atlanta, Georgia during the "burning" of that city on July 22, 1864. There was constant firing for six weeks, where 160 confederates were buried in one trench. James Willis Pace surrendered at the end of the Civil War at Macon, Mississippi.

 

     After the war, James Willis Pace was married to Sarah Jane McLendon, b ca 1850, d ca 1884 in Bell County, Texas. James Willis moved his family into Bell County, as did his surviving siblings, where he and Sarah Jane lived until her death. James Willis and Sarah Jane (McLendon) Pace had eleven children:

 

     Ida Jane Pace, b May 27, 1866 - married December 28, 1884 to George Alfred Bufkin.

 

     Nancy Ella Pace, b September 28, 1867 - married December 22, 1896 to Francis Marion Logan.

 

     William John ("Jack") Pace, b February 21, 1869 - married September 29, 1898 to Ethel Chamberlain, b in the Blue Ridge Community of Falls County, Texas - a daughter of Angelo Ghiberti and Sarah (Harlan) Chamberlain. They had five children. "Jack" was a Baptist minister.

     Mary Emma Pace, b August 13, 1870 - died young.

 

     Enola ("Dora") Pace, b September 7, 1871 - married Ben Hamilton, and had four children.

 

     James McLendon Pace, b July 22, 1874 - died young.

 

     Martha Adeline Pace, b February 11, 1876-married September 8, 1907 to Joseph F. Hood, and had no children.

 

     Lewis Dempsey Pace, b December 28, 1877 - married Ollie Lamb, and had one child.

 

     Walter Lee Pace - a twin, b February 19, 1880- married first to Ola Hay - a daughter of George Washington and Ruth (Davis) Hay. He served as Falls County Tax Assesor for one term; had five children; and married second to Harriett Thompson and had no issue.

 

     Robert Oscar Pace - a twin, b February 19, 1880 - married Bertha Daudle, and had two children.

 

     Jesse Freeman Pace, b April 15, 1882 - married September 9, 1903 to Lena King, and had five children.

 

    After the death of Sarah Jane (McLendon) Pace in Bell County, Texas, James Willis Pace married in Bell County secondly to Martha L. Roberts, and moved to the Cego area of Falls County, Texas in 1889. He and Martha were the parents of three children:

 

     Carl Ernest Pace, b March 2, 1888 - married February 20, 1909 to Jennie McKee - a daughter of William McKee of Cego, who was a nephew of Joseph Summerlin Bentley. They had four children.

 

     Sarah Jane ("Sallie") Pace, b December 17, 1889 in Falls County, Texas who married Fieldon Oras Bentley.

Lannus Pace, b January 19, 1892 in Falls County, Texas who married Virgie Viola Higgins, and had six children.

     James Willis Pace, son of James Dempsey Pace and Amelia Lucy Gregory, b 21 Feb. 1846 in Newton Co., Miss., d Mar. 1921 in Eddy, Texas.  Enlisted in Confederate Army Dec. 1863 at Newton, Miss., Co. E. Parron's Bat., Ferguson's Cav.  Surrendered at Macon when Lee surrendered.  He said that he was never seriously wounded, but his thumb was blistered by a minnie ball while he slept.
