Robert Allen Oakes, b April 11, 1831, in Tennessee, d May 3, 1923, in Marlin, Falls County, Texas -- was a son of Charles and Susan (Neal) Oakes, natives of Virginia and Tennessee, respectively.
Robert Allen Oakes (called "Al") came to Texas with his parents in 1845; and in 1854, he married first to Mary Helen Ward, b April 2, 1836, in Georgia, d August 31, 1873, -- a daughter of John and Mary Helen (Rhodes) Ward. "Al" married secondly in 1875 to Mrs. Leone (Smith) Kinley -- widow of Abraham Kinley of Bosque County, Texas, and a daughter of James A. Smith of Anderson County, Texas, who was a brother of Mrs. John R. McClanahan. Leone (Smith) was born November 13, 1842, d January 10, 1920. Robert Allen Oakes, at age 85, married thirdly in 1916 at Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas to a Miss Alice Duff, b ca 1896 in Alvarado, Texas. She was not listed as a survivor, when his obituary was written in 1923.
By his first marriage to Mary Helen (Ward), Robert Allen Oakes had eight children:
Adeline ("Addie") Oakes -- married Marcus Henry Coone.
Sam Houston Oakes -- was killed "with a horse."
Susan Jane Oakes ("Sue"), b September 5, 1859, d January 6, 1930, -- was the second wife of John A. Gill, b May 5, 1850, d October 13, 1911, whose first wife was Fredonia (Reed) Gill, b September 1, 1855, d February 29, 1888, -- a daughter of Thomas Didley and Sarah (Oakes) Reed.
Charles H. Oakes -- while there is a tombstone in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas, with his name on it, there are no dates of birth or death.
Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Oakes, b December 27, 1864, d March 3, 1948, -- married George A. Gill, b November 6, 1861, d August 8, 1889.
Francis Marion Oakes ("Frank"), b January 3, 1867, d October 27, 1930, -- Mary Alice Smith, b October 30, 1874, d June 23, 1946, and both buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Texas. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Marlin, and had their on Walker Street. The beautiful flowers of Mary Alice often adorned the church. No further information.
Robert Allen Oakes -- a daughter called "Allie" -- was born January 1, 1869, d December 22, 1959, -- married Isaac Barton, son of David G. and Mary Paralee (Wilson) Oakes, and had eight children.
Mary ("Mollie") Oakes -- married first to Frank Phillips, and second to Jack H. Claybrook. They built their on land which belonged to her father.
By his second marriage to Mrs. Leona (Smith) Kinley, Robert Allen Oakes had two children:
James Mitchell Oakes, b September 29, 1875, d September 5, 1962 -- married Hattie Lee Gilbery, b April 25, 1877, d February 4, 1954, and both buried by his mother in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin.
Georgia Oakes, b February 20, 1877, d April 1, 1953 and buried by her mother and brother in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin -- married first to Wiley Carter Jones -- a son of Hardy R. and Mary Jane (Fiser) Jones, and had one son, Dr. Wiley O. Jones who married first Mary Agnes Rains and had Churchill Jones, who married Carol Jerichow of Falls County, Texas and have Christopher and Courtney Jones. Wiley Jones married second in 1971 to Mrs. Elizabeth (Goode) Fannin who had two children by her first husband, Ernest FanninJr., Shirle Ann Fannin, b May 3, 1941, Hector M. Bercovich and resides in Houston; and Timothy Ernest Fannin, b August 5, 1950 -- married Donna Beatty of Virginia, and resides in Fairfax, Virginia. Georgia (Oakes) Jones later married a Mr. Gilbert, but had no children by this marriage.
Robert Allen oakes established himself in the mercantile business until the outbreak of the Civil War. He first enlisted in the Confederate States Army with his younger brother, Francis Marion Oakes, and served in Company B, 4th Texas Regiment until 1863. While his brother remained with the CSA, Robert Allen deserted in 1863 and made his way to Mexico, where he joined the company of Union soldiers organized by his older brother, William E. Oakes, and served in that group until the end of the Civil war. Returning to Marlin. he resumed the mercantile business until 1868, when Governor Davis appointed him Sheriff of Falls County. After two years as Sheriff, he resigned, and settled on his land. In 1892, he owned over 3,000 acres, and had about 1,200 cattle and 75 horses and mules. His annual cotton crop at that time amounted to about 400 bales.
Oakes Street in Marlin was named for this family.
