ANSON
NORWOOD
Anson Norwood, b 1792 in North Carolina, d October 28, 1861 in Marlin,
Falls County, Texas - married January 3, 1828, to Julianne Patterson, b 1810 in
Kentucky, d February 23, 1869 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas. They both were
buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin.
Anson and Julianne moved to Falls County prior to May 7, 1855, where
Anson was listed on the Jury List of the District Court. They brought three sons
and three daughters with them, and had 132 slaves who accompanied them to Falls
County.
The family settled on the East Bank of the Brazos River, but because of
the mosquitoes and other hazards of living near the river, Anson sold the land
and bought a farm four miles north of Marlin. The first six of seven children
were born in Alabama - the last and youngest was born in Falls County, Texas:
John W. Norwood, b November 6, 1828, d July 31, 1905 in Marlin - married
October 29, 1856 in Falls County to Adaline F. Moore, b January 12, 1840 in
Georgia, d January 8, 1919 - and both buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin.
Martha Norwood ("Mattie"), b December 22, 1831 in Alabama, d February 2,
1895 - married Jesse P. Bowles, b 1820 in Missouri, d August 30, 1882 - and both
buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin.
Thomas Lee Norwood, b 1833 in Alabama, d September 17, 1863 - being
killed during the Civil War while in the Confederate States Army as a Private in
Company E, 4th Texas Infantry. There is a memorial tombstone for him in the
Calvary Cemetery near his father, Anson Norwood.
Anna Willie Norwood, b April 21, 1835 in Alabama, d September 9, 1873 in
Marlin, Texas - was the second wife of Judge E. C. Stuart, whom she married
January 5, 1860 in Marlin. Judge Stuart was from Mississippi - a widower with
four children: James Monroe, Fleet, Leonard, and Charles Stuart. Judge E. C.
Stuart was b February 15, 1820, d October 3, 1889- and buried by his second wife
in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin.
Lidia A. Norwood, b December 18, 1839 in Alabama, d May 28, 1917 in
Marlin - married in Falls County on February 12, 1857 to James Craik. She is
buried in Calvary Cemetery - no information as to the burial place of James
Craik.
Anson Norwood, Jr., b 1850 in Alabama, d November 4, 1860 and buried in
Calvary Cemetery at Marlin by his parents.
Louise Norwood, b 1855 in Falls County, Texas, d September 2, 1873 and
buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin.
Descendants of Anson and Julianne Norwood have been prominent since 1855
in Falls County history.
