GENERAL NEPHTHILIA MARION NEWBY

 

 

     General Nephthilia Marion Newby (his name, not rank, and called "Nepthilia"), b August 28, 1834 in Warren County, Tennessee, d March 11, 1912 at Mooreville, Falls County, Texas - was a son of William B. R. Newby, b April 22, 1813, d March 25, 1862, and his wife, Synthia Ann (Pace) Newby, b July 14, 1810, d July 2, 1877. Both, father and son, were veterans of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Nepthilia succeeded his father as Company Commander of Company A, 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, when his father died in the Battle of Shiloh. He finished the war with the rank of Captain - having received commendations for his service in the Battle of Chickamauga.

     After the war, Nephthilia returned to his farm north of McMinnville, and served as a Warren County, Tennessee Justice of the Peace from 1878 to the 1880's.

     On December 27, 1854, Nephthilia Newby had married Sarah F. Wheeler (called "Sallie"), b March 30, 1832, d February 3, 1908 in Mooreville. They had seven children, and several of these also came to Falls County in the late 1890's, settling near Mooreville:

     John Dillard Newby, b May 8, 1856 in Tennessee.

     James Andrew Newby, b April 1, 1858, d June 7, 1928 - married Margaret L. Crain.

     William Nathan Newby, b March 12,1860.

     General Nephthilia Marion Newby, Jr., b December 23,1863, d August 10, 1889 in Tennessee.

     Joseph Newby, b 1867 - married Anna Jones, b December 24, 1884, and was a farmer in Falls County, Texas.

     Mary Elizabeth Newby, b March 28, 1870 in Tennessee, d September 12, 1927 at Mooreville, Texas - married Leander Lee Marcrum (sic Markham).

     Cynthia\Catherine Newby, b December 7,1872 in Tennessee-married John G. Connally, and lived near Bruceville, McLennan County, Texas.
