WILLIAM J. MORGAN

 

William J. Morgan, b ca 1817 in Alabama, d No­vember 5, 1862 at his in northeastern Falls County, Texas ‑ was a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Morgan, who immigrated to Texas via Georgia and Wilcox County, Alabama in 1833.

William was only sixteen at the time he came with his parents and siblings to Texas; but he soon learned the art of survival in what was then a wilderness. He served in the Texas Army during the Revolution, and fought under Captain Benjamin Bryant, along with his brothers, George Washington Morgan and Andrew Jackson Morgan, after the massacre of his parents and three other members of the household. His wife, Stacey Ann (Marlin) Morgan, was severely wounded during the January 1, 1939 massacre.

On July 20, 1838 in Robertson County, Texas, Wil­liam was married to Mrs. Stacey Ann (Marlin) Golden, b ca 1818 in Tennessee, d ca 1900 ‑ a daughter of James and Nancy (Taylor) Marlin, who were also pio­neers to Coahuila, Mexico (Texas).

After the estate of his parents had been settled, and the land sold, William and Stacey moved away from the Brazos River to their own farm between Perry and Riesel, Texas.

Their first child was born several months after Stacey's injury during the January 1, 1839 massacre, and they had seven other children:

Nancy Adeline Morgan, b 1839 in Texas, date of death unknown‑married ca 1855 to Isaac Porter Mullens, b 1836 in Franklin County, Alabama, d ca 1867. They had: William Thomas Mullens, b 1856; James Mullens, b 1858; Peachy Mullens, b 1859; Isaac Mullens, b 1862; Porter R. Mullens, b June 6, 1865; and Marlin Mullens. The Mullens family have many descendants who reside in the Riesel, Texas area.

Louisa E. Morgan, b 1843 ‑ no further information.

James Marlin Morgan, b 1845‑no further information.

Hessie Jane Morgan, b 1847, died before 1860.

Mary Ann Morgan, b 1850 ‑ married July 25, 1867 to Rufus Smith, b 1832 in Tennessee ‑ a son of Charles and Rebecca (Marlin) Smith, Charles Smith was the first Chief Justice of Falls County; and Rebecca was a daughter of James and Nancy (Taylor) Marlin.

William J. Morgan, Jr., b 1854‑no further information.

George W. Morgan, b ca 1856 ‑ married Mary Ann Holley. No further information.

Stacey Ann Morgan, b 1859‑no further information.

The Will of William J. Morgan instructed his wife to set aside money for the rearing and education of their minor children, and to divide the rest of the estate with the older children on her death.

On May 28, 1865 in Falls County, Texas, Stacey Ann (Marlin) Golden Morgan was married third to J. M. McBee, and they had no issue.
