HAROLD CHAMBERLAIN MITCHELL
Harold Chamberlain Mitchell (called "Hal"), b May 1,
1882 in Blue Ridge, Falls County, Texas, d October 29, 1955 in Marlin, Falls
County, Texas and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin ‑ was a son of William
Henry and Margaret Lucinda (Chamberlain) Mitchell. Hal attended Sam Houston
State Normal Institute at Huntsville, Texas, and then went to a college in
Missouri where he became a certified teacher. For a while he taught school in
Elk, Texas ‑ returning to Blue Ridge shortly before his father's death which
resulted in his management of that property for his mother. Hal did not return
to the teaching profession ‑selecting, instead, to concentrate on farming and
ranching.
On January 9, 1921, Hal married May Sessions, b
August 6, 1888 in Freestone County, Texas, d August 20, 1936 in San Antonio,
Bexar County, Texas while hospitalized there, and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery
in Falls County ‑ a daughter of Carter A. and Sarah Virginia (Rogers) Sessions.
They were the parents of
two
children:
Harold Chamberlain Mitchell, Jr., b August 14, 1921,
d December 19, 1985 and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin, Texas ‑ married
August 31, 1946 in Marlin to Dorothy Katherine Haug, b December 1, 1924 at
Perry, Texas ‑ daughter of Leonard and Alice (Eckert) Haug.
Sarah Margaret Mitchell, b August 31, 1930 in Falls
County, Texas, attended schools in Freestone County ‑ graduating from high
school in 1946 as Valedictorian. She then attended Westminster College, Baylor
University in Waco, Texas; Dallas College of S.M.U.; and El Centro College
(Adult Education Classes) in Dallas. On August 4, 1951 in Lovers Lane Methodist
Church in Dallas, Texas, Sarah Margaret married Ray R. Culbertson, Jr. of Lamar
County, Texas. They had no living issue, and were divorced January 9, 1952.
Sarah Margaret ‑ named for her two grandmothers ‑ is a member of the
Episcopalian denomination, is an avid gardener, an experienced seamstress, and
enjoys sewing for herself and her friends. Her professional background includes
many years as a legal secretary, managing a boutique located in "Old Town in the
Village" in Dallas, Texas; and more recently, as an assistant to a Financial
Planner. She remains a bachelorette in Dallas, residing in her own in the
Dallas neighborhood known as "M Street Area." She is an active member of Dallas
Museum of Art, Friends of Falls County Historical Museum; and has been elected
to membership to the National Trust for Historic Preservation ‑ the only
private, nonprofit group chartered by the Congress of the United States to
preserve "sites, buildings, and objects of national significance" in defense of
America's heritage and traditions.
Harold Chamberlain Mitchell first bought land on "Old
Bald Hill Road" east of Marlin, after deciding to engage in agricultural and
ranching pursuits. He later bought land west of Marlin in the Brazos River
Bottom.
Hal
married second to Carrie Grater of Riesel, Texas, and she continues to reside in
the of her parents in Reisel.
