Lafayette King Long, b 12 January 1854 in Yazoo,
Mississippi, to Jesse Gilitan Long, Caswell County, North Carolina and Martha
Louise King, Alabama. Lafayette
died 21 January 1945 in Rosebud, Texas and is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery,
Rosebud, Texas.
Lafayette migrated with his family to
Grimes County, Texas sometime in the early part of 1871.
His father Jessie Long sold 160 acres of land in Carroll County, Mississippi to
George W. Wiggins on 24 December 1870, so it can be fairly accurate to say they
migrated immediately after selling the land.
Lafayette King Long married Margaret Lee
Whitfield, January 16, 1877, in Grimes County, Texas.
Margaret was born 1859 in Madison Tennessee and died 1899 in Alderson,
Grimes County, Texas. This union
produced five children.
Robert Emmett Long, b October 22, 1877, d February 22, 1927, in Abilene, Tyler
Texas. Married to Margaret Cordill
Moody. Robert was Sheriff of
Montgomery County Texas in early 1900.
John Albert Long, b Abt. 1881, Grimes County, Texas, d Abt. 1885 in Grimes
County, Texas.
Margaret (Maggie) Long b April 1882, in Grimes County, Texas and married Dr.
Everett. Margaret attended Baylor
College in Waco in 1900.
Unknown Long (F) b Abt. 1883, d Unknown
Bessie Ethel Long, b 15 October 1886 in Anderson, Grimes County Texas, died 19
April 1966 in Houston Texas. Interred at Woodlawn Cemetery, Rosebud, Texas next to her
husband Robert Lafayette Howard.
Bessie married Robert Lafayette Howard in Cameron, Milam County Texas, September
22, 1902.
Thelma Long, b 24 March 1888 in Anderson, Grimes County, Texas and died November
1983, in Houston Texas. Thelma married Pete Bubela in Falls County, Texas. No issue were produced. Thelma and Pete Bubela owned and run a
grocery store in Rosebud, Texas from the thirties to late 1960/70.
After the death of his first wife, Margaret
Whitfield, oral history indicates that Lafayette may have had a extremely
difficult time in caring for his young children.
Lafayette met and married Cora Bell Garrell (maiden name unknown). Cora Bell was b August 15, 1869 in
Mississippi, died December 11, 1960, in Rosebud, Texas. She is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery,
Rosebud, with her husband. This marriage produces seven children, Horace,
Purvis, Author, Bryon, Mary, Martha and Willard.
Cora was stepmother to Emmett, Maggie, Bessie and Thelma. Two children from Lafayette first
marriage died in early childhood from Diptheria.
Cora bell had two children
in her first marriage, Claude and Frank Garrell.
