JOHN SWEPSTON LLEWELLYN

 

 

     Dr. John Swepston Llewellyn, b August 6,1824 in Halifax County, Virginia, d June 7,1897 at Durango, Falls County, Texas - was a son of John Stephen and Harriett Edwards (Jones) Llewellyn of Virginia. On March 3, 1852, Dr. Llewellyn received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical School of Philadelphia. Although he registered in Falls County as a physician in 1874, census records show that he was married in Texas about 1860, and all his children were born in Texas.

     Dr. Llewellyn married Mary Frances Currie, b January 1,1838 in Caswell County, North Carolina, d December 12, 1909 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - a daughter of James Currie, who died before 1860, and his wife, Julia Ann (Mitchell) Currie, b July 24, 1815 in North Carolina, d September 19, 1882, at Durango. Dr. John S. and Mary Frances (Currie) Llewellyn were both buried in Carolina Cemetery near Durango, as were her mother, several of their children, and some of her siblings.

     Dr. Llewellyn and Mary were in Falls County in the mid-sixties, living in the Durango area of West Falls County, where he practiced medicine for nearly thirty years. They were the parents of seven children:

     James Currie Llewellyn, b ca 1861 in Texas- married first to Annie Rice and had Jack Currie Llewellyn and Lillian Clifford Llewellyn, b August 29, 1887, d June 4, 1889 and buried in Carolina Cemetery. James Currie (called "Currie") Llewellyn married second to "Bird" Wallace.

     Nathaniel Jones Llewellyn (called "Nat"), b April 30, 1863 in Texas, d July 1, 1936 and buried in Calvary Cemetery at Marlin - married Una Ross Pringle, b January 1, 1881 in Falls County, Texas, d December 13, 1983 in Marlin at the age of almost 103 years - a daughter of Isham Johnson and Sarah Ann (Ross) Pringle, natives of Mississippi who had settled in Falls County, Texas. Nat studied law, moving to Marlin, where he was a distinguished member of the "Bar" for many years. He built his on Chambers Street in Marlin. Nat and Una had two children: Nathaniel Jones Llewellyn, Jr., b September 19, 1910, d October 25, 1921 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin; and Sarah Ann Llewellyn, b June 19, 1912, who still lives in the her parents built.

     The Llewellyn and Currie families were members of the Carolina Presbyterian Church, and Nat became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marlin, where his daughter, Sarah Ann, continues as a member.

     Thomas W. Llewellyn, b February 22, 1865, d December 31, 1880, and was buried in Carolina Cemetery.

     Henry Haywood Llewellyn, b November 19, 1866, d January 11, 1924 - married Rebecca Landrum, b December 12, 1870, d November 23, 1939 - a daughter of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Rains) Landrum. Henry farmed in the Durango area of Falls County, and they had one child, Ruth Llewellyn.

     Julian G. Llewellyn, b ca 1868 in Texas - married Ella Griffith, and had two children: Mary Frances and John S. Llewellyn.

     Salome Llewellyn, b September 12, 1878, d October 16, 1947 and buried in Carolina Cemetery - was not married. .

     Jack Llewellyn, b in September 1880 - no further information.
