WILLIAM GRADY LIGON, II

 

 

 

     William Grady Ligon, II, b July 30, 1916, d May 10, 1983 and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery at Lott, Falls County, Texas - was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Grady Ligon, I. He was a Lott High School graduate, along with his brother, Tony L. Ligon, and both served in World War II. Grady entered the U.S. Army in 1941 - training at Camp Bowie, Texas; Camp Young, California; Camp Rucker, Alabama; and Camp Butner, North Carolina. He was sent to Europe, became a First Lieutenant, and served in England, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany; and was awarded the ETO Ribbon with five Stars, a Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.

     Grady had married in 1943, before leaving for Europe, to Helen Hailey, b February 7, 1921 at Lott - a daughter of Rolla Will and Bobbie (Ruble) Hailey. Grady and Helen had two children:

     William Grady Ligon, III, b October 15, 1944; and Hal Hailey Ligon, b August 18, 1956, d August 20, 1956 and buried in Clover Hill Cemetery in Lott, Texas.

     Helen (Hailey) Ligon has climbed the career ladder with B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Baylor University, where she is currently teaching. She had taught in Lott and Marlin Independent School Districts. She and Grady lived in Marlin in the early 1950's, and she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was having a meeting in her in Marlin at the time the May 11, 1952 tornado hit Waco, in which three Lott women were killed.

     Grady worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, requiring constant travel. After several years, he resigned to work at The Fair - a Western Clothing Store in Lott, Texas which is owned by his mother-in-law. Grady and Helen returned to make their in Lott, and she commuted to Waco to teach, which she continues to do since Grady's death.
