MOSES
LEVY
Moses Levy, born in Poland and brought to Texas in 1870 by his elder
brother, Marx Levy - was the youngest child
of Nathan and Chirly Levy, natives of Poland. He married about 1885 to Esther
(maiden name unknown), who was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. From 1885 to
about 1900, Mose Levy was in partnership with Marx Levy in the general
mercantile business in Marlin, establishing his own mercantile operation under
his own name in 1900, in which he continued until his death in 1913.
Five children were born to Moses and Esther Levy:
Isidora L. Levy-married a Mr. Naman, of Waco, Texas.
Cecile L. Levy - married a Mr. August, and lived in San Antonio, Texas.
Nathan Levy, b April 25, 1895 in Marlin, d June 28, 1962 - was educated
in the Marlin public schools, and served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He
returned to Marlin after that war, to operate the Levy Grocery Company. Nathan
Levy was married in October 1929 to Hattie Zadek, of San Antonio, Texas, and
they had only one daughter: Maurine Levy, who married a Mr. Wood, and resided in
Waco, Texas. Mrs. Levy died in 1933, and Mr. Levy was married
second in 1936 to Lottie Naman Silvers. Nathan Levy was active in the social,
civic, and community affairs of Marlin - being a member of the
Marlin Chamber of Commerce, Heart Fund Drive, Rotary Club; and served as
president of First State Bank of Marlin, and a trustee of
Torbett-Hutchings-Smith Memorial Hospital. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and a
member of the congregation of Rodef Sholom, of Waco, Texas. He is remembered as
one of Marlin's most beloved philanthropists, and usually kept his good works
and charity to himself.

Robert E. Levy, b July 15, 1905 in Marlin, who at- tended public schools
in Marlin until his last year in high school, when the entire family, with the
exception of the older son, Nathan Levy, moved to Waco, Texas. Robert E. Levy
was then graduated from Waco High School, and subsequently attended the
University of Texas from 1922 to 1926, receiving a BBA degree. Higher education
and the lure of a large city attracted Robert, who went to New York City, where
he spent three and a half years training with a Wall Street brokerage firm, and
also spent part of the time as a graduate student at Columbia University.
Returning to Texas, he spent a year with a Dallas, Texas brokerage firm -
predecessor to Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith; and in 1930, he
established his own small brokerage firm in the Amicable Building in Waco,
Texas. In 1931, Robert was married to Elva Sanger Godshaw, a granddaughter of
one of the sons of a pioneer Texas family, and they had
one daughter: Carolyn Levy, b 1938, who married Paul Greenberg, an
editorial writer, and moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, with their two children.
Robert and Elva have continued to reside in Waco, and he retired in 1964 -
