SAMUEL LANDRUM
Samuel Landrum, b October 28, 1810 in Edgefield ] District, South
Carolina, d July 29, 1890 near Chilton and buried in Carolina
Cemetery - was a son of : George Landrum and Rebecca (Drake) Landrum, a )
daughter of Richard and Mary (Birdsong) Drake. The Landrum family went to
Georgia in 1819, then to Alabama in 1825.
In 1848, Samuel moved from Montgomery County, Alabama to Montgomery
County, Texas, where he taught school, operated a mercantile business, and
farmed. In 1854, he moved to Falls County, Texas - settling on a 1,000-acre farm
on Deer Creek in the
Allen League west of the Brazos River. He built a log cabin in 1857,
having the first glass windows in Falls, County.
Samuel enlisted in the Confederate States Army f during the Civil War,
serving with Company B, 5th Texas Calvary, Hardeman's Army, Green's Brigade,
Trans-Mississippi Army, until the end of the war. His service was on the west
side of the Mississippi River. 1
On December 5, 1869 in Falls County, Texas, Samuel Landrum was married to
Mary Elizabeth Rains, b November 4,1837 in New Bern County, North Carolina, d
May 3, 1920 in Chilton, Falls County, Texas, and buried in Carolina Cemetery -
the youngest child of Henry and Nancy (Raiford) Rains.
In 1873, Samuel opened a store on the Marlin - Chilton Road west of the
Brazos River, and a post office is created which was called Landrum Post Office
at Landrum, Texas. It was discontinued in 1883.
The Landrums were of the Presbyterian faith, and Samuel was a member of
the Masonic Lodge #330 in 1870. Samuel had lost the sight in one of his eyes as
a boy, and three years before his death, he became totally blind and the eye
required removal because of the sufferable pain it was causing. Samuel and Mary
Elizabeth (Rains) Landrum had four children:
Sarah Rebecca Landrum, b December 12, 1870, d November 23, 1939 - married
December 31, 1895 to Henry Llewellyn, and had one daughter, Mary Ruth Llewellyn,
b September 7, 1908, d April 2, 1978.
John Benjamin Landrum, b August 24, 1872, d March 3, 1942 - married Mrs.
Johnny Lee (Bedell) de Graffenried.
Eddie Antoinette Landrum, b February 6, 1875, d August 13, 1946

was not
married.
Rowena Landrum, b November 11, 1877, d January 30, 1959 – was not
married.
