DAVID PENNINGTON KING
David Pennington King, b September 19, 1878 at Thornton, Limestone County,
Texas, d July 16, 1957 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in Calvary
Cemetery there - was a son of Miles Morgan and Sarah Ann (Lawley) King - pioneer
settlers of Limestone County. Miles Morgan King, a Boone descendant, came to
Texas during the time it was The Republic of Texas, and received a land grant
for his service as a Minute Man in 1839. He also served in the Confederate
States Army during the Civil War. Sarah Ann (Lawley) King was descended from the
American Revolutionary soldier, John Lawley.
On May 4, 1911 in Kosse, Limestone County,
Texas, David Pennington King was married to Georgia Ann Bennett, b March 4, 1886
in Newburg, Izard County, Arkansas, d February 2, 1972 in a nursing in
Marlin, Falls County, Texas and buried in Hillcrest Cemetery there - a daughter
of William Oscar and Nancy Irby (Allen) Bennett. The Bennett’s lived in Arkansas
until Georgia Ann was almost five years of age, when they moved to Kosse, Texas.
They soon after relocated in Odds, Texas for about six years,
but then returned to Kosse. The Bennett’s were descended from old Virginia and North Carolina
families, including the Laniers, Byrds, and Nances,
whose family lines may by traced back to Magna Charta Sureties in England. Other
Bennett ancestors were French Huguenots in Manakintowne, Virginia, and included
the Hammond and Dumas families in North Carolina.
After their marriage, David and Georgia
lived one mile south of Thornton, Texas on the King farm which he and a brother,
John, had purchased from the remaining heirs of the King family. They joined the
Church of Christ of Thornton on August 27, 1911. In January 1916, Dave and
Georgia sold their share of the property to his brother, and moved to the new
which Dave had built on Gift Street in Marlin, Falls County, Texas. He was
engaged in carpentry and contracting work until his retirement in 1955. Many of
the homes, schoolhouses, and business buildings which were contracted by Dave in
Marlin and other towns, are still standing and in good repair. He took enormous
pride in his work, and enjoyed showing these places to his guests.
Georgia Ann (Bennett) King was a talented
musician and taught her children to play the piano. She enjoyed doing
needlework, and ran a small grocery store near the home. She was a devoted wife
and mother, and a gracious hostess who entertained many relatives and friends in
her home. After her death, the grave of her husband, David Pennington King, was
moved from the Calvary Cemetery to Hillcrest Cemetery.
David
Pennington and Georgia Ann (Bennett) King were the parents of two children:

Thornton, Limestone County, Texas, d February 24, 1979 in Kerrville, Texas. He
was a 1930 graduate of Marlin High School.
